Eau no! French fizzy water brand Badoit is no longer on sale in UK, sparking dismay among its middle-class fanclub

  • Badoit is no longer being stocked at Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s stores
  • From Saint-Galmier springs, it is naturally carbonated from subterranean gases
  • A spokesman said it has pulled out to prioritise France, its biggest market

A French fizzy water brand adored by the middle classes is no longer being exported to the UK.

Customers have been voicing their sorrow after discovering Badoit – from springs in Saint-Galmier in the Loire region – is no longer being stocked at Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Owner Danone revealed it has pulled out of the UK market because of shortages caused by droughts. 

The mineral water is naturally carbonated from subterranean gases and was first bottled by a silk salesman, Auguste Badoit, in 1837.

‘This is not related to Brexit. Badoit is a natural mineral water and we are conscious to preserve its source and never collect more than nature can offer,’ a spokesman told The Times.

‘We currently have more demand than capacity for Badoit so, across 2019, we have been stopping the export of Badoit in some markets to prioritise its biggest market, France. 

‘We are looking to take what we believe to be a responsible approach, reducing the amount of Badoit we bottle and sell to protect the source for future generations.’

Customers have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment.

Ruth Watson tweeted: ‘Couldn’t understand why neither Sainsbury’s, Waitrose nor Tesco had any Badoit. So I phoned to ask why AND THE SOURCE/WATER HAS DRIED UP! Praying for a wet winter.’

Kay Gale added: ‘@waitrose Why aren’t you selling #Badoit anymore??? One of the most classic iconic soft drinks ever and you don’t want to sell it?’

But another user said: ‘There’s no other sparkling water like it and I can understand that Badoit have to ensure the sustainability of the source. And I’m not complaining.

‘I’m fortunate enough to have access to plenty of safe clean drinking water.’
