HOLLYOAKS fans were buzzing with excitement last night after Grace Black and James Nightingale were FINALLY revealed as the ones who shot Mercedes McQueen.

The hit soap finally put an end to the whodunnit mystery with its identity reveal after Liam overheard the pair talking about it.

Why did Grace and James shoot Mercedes in Hollyoaks?

Viewers have spent the last few weeks trying to work out who attempted to kill Mercedes, after she was shot down by the mystery person on the day of Harry Thompson’s funeral.

There was a string of seven official suspects after the brunette collapsed in the middle of The Loft’s dance floor – all of whom had a vendetta against Mercedes.

Viewers thought the identity of the mystery culprit had been uncovered after Mercedes woke up from her coma and accused husband Sylver of pulling the trigger.

Sylver definitely had a motive given that he’d just discovered his wife Mercedes had been cheating with Liam Donovan for the best part of a year.

But last night's episode revealed it was in fact James and Grace – both of whom had serious motives for wanting Mercedes in her grave.

The pair were furious to discover that Mercedes framed Harry Thompson as the driver during Grace’s hit-and-run.

The revelation came during Harry’s funeral when Grace played the recording of Mercedes confessing her crime aloud.

In the tape, Mercedes also threatened to kill Harry, who was murdered earlier this year.

This makes Mercedes a prime suspect in Harry’s murder.

James had been on the warpath since his lover Harry’s death.

Certain that Mercedes killed his boyfriend after listening to the tape, he was desperate to make Mercedes pay.

Grace might have survived her hit-and-run horror, but she came to in hospital unable to feel her legs.

The soap legend now blames Mercedes for the accident, and wanted to make her pay for leaving her in a wheelchair.

How were Grace and James revealed as the mystery shooters in Hollyoaks?

A full flashback scene finally let viewers in on the secret of  who pulled the trigger as Mercedes danced drunk and alone in the Loft.

Grace and James were both seen climbing the steps to the club.

In a dramatic glimpse of the action, Grace was seen firing the first shot which missed.

James then appeared behind her and they both put their fingers on the trigger for the shot that put Mercy in a coma.

Fans were buzzing with excitement at the plot twist.

One fan took to Twitter to say: "AS IFFFFFFFF!! Grace & James shot Mercedes!! #doubledunnit #hollyoaks."

Another fan added: "One of them yes but both together? NOPE! Excellent twist! Can't wait to see what's next."
