Starz series Power has built up a huge following over the six seasons it was on screens. Following the end of Power in February 2020, Starz announced it had commissioned a whopping four new spin-offs from the main series. Inspired by the success of the Marvel franchise, the various spin-offs will follow different characters from the original series.

The first of these shows will be Power Book II: Ghost which will feature new drug dealer Monet (played by Mary J. Blige).

Book II comes hot on the heels of Power with mere hours between James “Ghost” St Patrick’s (Omari Hardwick) demise and the beginning of Monet’s reign.

The series will also feature Power veterans Naturi Naughton reprising her role as Tasha St Patrick and Michael Rainey Jr as Ghost’s son and murderer Tariq.

Monet and shady lawyer Davis McLean (Cliff “Method Man” Smith) will be joining the cast with their stories explored but the St Patrick are going to be intertwined with these new characters.

Who is Power star Mary J Blige?

Prior to landing the role as Monet, Blige was already a huge name in the entertainment business.

Not only does she have successful music career with eight platinum albums and nine Grammy Awards to her name, but she’s forged an impressive career within the sphere of acting.

The New York star began her acting career in the early Noughties with a role in the TV series Strong Medicine.

After this, she went on to have small roles in Ghost Whisperer and cameos in Entourage and 30 Rock.

She went on to star in movie Rock of Ages before parts in Empire, Black-ish and How To Get Away With Murder.

Blige even lent her voice to the character of Irene in the animated movie Sherlock Gnomes.

However, her biggest part came in 2019 when she portrayed assassin Cha-Cha in Netflix’s adaptation of The Umbrella Academy.

Starring opposite Mindhunter’s Cameron Britton as fellow hit-man Hazel, they made a fascinating pairing as they were tasked with taking out some characters.

Fans of the show got a spectacular showdown between Cha-Cha and Hazel which saw them in an action-packed fight sequence.

Blige has also featured in the TV series of Scream in a recurring role as well as movies Body Cam and Trolls World Tour.

According to IMDb, she will next be starring in The Violent Heart, Pink Skies Above and the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect in which she plays Dinah Washington.

But it will be Monet which will be her next big character and depending on the success of the Book II, Blige could be on our screens for many years to come as the streetwise queenpin.

Speaking about landing the role of Monet, the star told media at the Television Critics Association Tour previously: “This is probably going to be the most exciting thing that will happen to me this year and I want to thank [Power creator] Courtney Kemp and 50 Cent for starting this conversation with me.”

Blige went on to say: “I’ve known so many Tashas, I’ve known so many Ghosts.

“I’ve dated so many Ghosts, I’m a huge fan for life, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”

While Power Kemp teased to Entertainment Weekly how Monet would oversee her business with “an iron fist”.

Kemp told the outlet: “For Mary’s character, we use all the power and presence of the actress to communicate how this is a woman who is remarkable and unique in her abilities.

“She’s as smart, savvy, and strategic as Ghost ever was, but her learning doesn’t come from books. We always said Ghost was a bookish kid who read all the time. This woman’s acumen comes from the street.”
