A SHEER, ruffled blouse, pearl earring and glamorous silver rings…it was an outfit any starlet would have been proud to walk the red carpet in.
But it wasn't a leggy model who turned out to the Met Gala in such a stylish outfit, it was Harry Styles – former boy band member, teen heartthrob and a thoroughly modern pin-up.
The theme of the fashion bash was 'camp' – and Harry definitely got the memo.
Cheeky fans and a bemused Piers Morgan were quick to poke fun at the singer calling his outfit "ridiculous" and suggesting he'd raided "his nan's wardrobe".
But others applauded Harry's metrosexual look, saying he looked "handsome" in his "awesome" clothes.
One wrote: "Harry styles at the met gala… it’s a yes from me!"
'I won't label my sexuality'
This is the flamboyant image we've grown to associate with the singer, who was always the most alternatively dressed member of One Direction.
But his style has been accentuated since his first solo album in May 2017 and ever since he's sealed his reputation as a thoroughly modern pin-up, with a massive fan base of both men and women.
While he's famously dated the biggest female names in showbiz, he refuses to define his sexuality, keeping fans guessing, saying: “I’ve never felt the need to [label it] really. I don’t feel like it’s something I’ve ever felt like I have to explain about myself,” he told The Sun.
His recent song Medicine, includes the lyric, “The boys and the girls are here/ I mess around with him/ And I'm OK with it.”
Despite being pop’s most prolific ladies’ man, who famously dated Caroline Flack, Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner, Harry’s close male friendships have previously led to rumours about his sexuality.
In 2014, he denied a relationship with bandmate Louis Tomlinson, saying “We’re not dating, no. We’re just friends,” and he went on to joke that the theory, doing the rounds among fans online, was damaging his love life.
Louis later said that the rumours – dubbed the Larry Stylinson theory – made their friendship awkward.
He told The Sun: “It created this atmosphere between the two of us where everyone was looking into everything we did.
“It made everything, I think on both fences, a little bit more unapproachable.”
'People think he's gay because of his floral shirts'
Even his friendship with Nick Grimshaw, sparked gossip after he tweeted, “Love you” to the DJ.
Nick has categorically denied a sexual relationship with the star.
He told The Sun he found the rumours “weird”.
“It’s kind of crazy because we’d met and we just really got on,” he said.
“I think that people assumed that because I was gay and he wears like floral shirts that he must be gay, and they were like they must be going out with each other."
Ditching jeans for floral suits
When he first appeared on The X Factor at 16, he was seen more in jeans and a sweatshirt than floral shirts. Shortly after Harry shot to fame at 16, when One Direction came third on the final of The X Factor, he started dating Caroline Flack, 14 years his senior.
Since then, he's been linked to a raft of beauties including Nicole Scherzinger, several Victoria's Secret models and Kendall Jenner, in 2013 and again in 2015, who he was seen cosying up to at the Met Ball last night.
Styles' style
His fashion style has also evolved from the boyband uniform of black jeans and T-shirts, pulling out a floral shirt or sharp suit only on special occasions.
But, as his solo career blossomed, he ditched the clean cut image for high fashion and was signed up as the face of Gucci.
He was pictured wearing gaudy suits while clutching a chicken in a St Albans chippy in one ad and in another he is seen petting a pig and lamb.
He was snapped on the red carpet in anything from blue velvet to metallic harlequin designs although, after one appearance, eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out the floppy-haired singer looked like an Ikea sofa.
