Danny Dyer is reportedly set to return to documentaries following his EastEnders exit last year after nine years of playing Mick Carter.

According to reports, the legendary actor, 45, has apparently been busy filming a new Channel 4 two-parter called 21st Century Man, which is set to air later this year.

It is believed that the documentary will explore what it's like to be a "modern-day bloke", as well as toxic masculinity, men's mental health and relationships with women.

A source told The Sun : "This will be new ground for Danny and viewers will see a whole new side to him.

"He’ll still possess his usual bravado, but these are serious issues he’s exploring and he conducts himself accordingly. The look into toxic masculinity is particularly deep. It’s a hugely sensitive documentary all round."

OK! has contacted Channel 4 and Danny's representative for comment.

It's been a busy few months for Danny since leaving EastEnders as the actor has been part of Channel 5 drama Heat, Netflix game show Cheat and is set to appear in BBC Two comedy Henpocalypse!, written by Caroline Moran – to name a few projects.

Danny said of his new role in the BBC Two show: "When I saw the pilot for Henpocalypse! I pi***ed myself laughing and I was so honoured to be asked to be a part of such an amazing job. You’re all gonna f*****g love it — it’s hilarious."

It comes as EastEnders fans were left in shock as last year's Christmas episode saw Danny's character Mick trying to save his ex-wife Linda Carter, who he had just reunited with, after she and Janine Butcher drove off a cliff and into the English Channel, where he disappeared at sea.

Mick is currently presumed dead and lost at sea, while no body has been found but the search has been called off.

Earlier this year, Danny teased a possible return to the show in an interview on the Jonathan Ross show.
