Coronation Street star Lisa George has addressed the rumours that her character Beth Tinker had been written off the ITV soap after an ongoing absence from Weatherfield.

The 52 year old actress assured fans that she had no plans to leave the cobbles and it was simply down to a cocktail of issues.

As well as being in the middle of contract negotiations, Lisa's discovery that she wasn't involved in a run of storylines over the summer meant she decided to jet off on a trip around Europe.

She then contracted the coronavirus, which kept her from returning to work even longer.

In an interview with The Mirror, the soap star, who looked barely recognisable playing another completely different role in July, explained all at the Pride of Britain Awards, which took place Sunday 8th October.

“It’s really weird, everyone was saying ‘you’re leaving, you’re leaving,'" Lisa laughed. “I was asked about my contract and I said I was waiting, and so they asked what I’d like to do if I didn’t get one and I said Call The Midwife.

"That’s all I said. It was a passing comment, then the next thing, everyone is ringing me like, ‘you’re leaving, you’re leaving.'

“I was like no, ‘what’s all this? No, I don’t know anything about it.’ It’s just weird. I don’t even know how it happened from the passing comment."

It comes months after Lisa sparked confusion about her future on the soap during an interview with Women's Weekly, as she told the magazine that she was interested in taking a role on hugely-popular long-running medical drama Call the Midwife.

At the time, the actress had already been absent from the cobbles for an extended period, and many speculated she had quietly slipped off the soap in search of other jobs.

In reality, Lisa was actually having a whale of a time hopping across four countries on a solo summer adventure.

Enthusing about how she had a "brilliant" and "wicked time" abroad, the actress did admit that she was simultaneously "gutted" to be missing out on some of the soap's hard-hitting and dramatic scenes during Super Soap Week.

She added that unfortunately the cast and crew were "dropping like flies" with Covid and it was unfortunate that she contracted it as well.

As a result, Lisa said she feels "completely out of the loop" after missing so much in the fictional northern town, and she doesn't even know what's "coming" for Beth or the rest of the residents.

Beth Tinker immediately became a loveable and hilarious fan-favourite on the soap when she arrived 12 years ago.

Earlier this year, the character suffered terrible heartbreak when her husband Kirk walked out on her as he learned the truth about her betrayal.
