LIVERPOOL will wait until May to lift the Premier League trophy – even if they win it with weeks in hand.

The Reds are 16 points clear of champions Manchester City and on course to break the record set by Manchester United in 2001 for earliest Premier League win, which was sealed by April 14.

Liverpool have the chance to extend their lead at the top to 22 points by the time City next play.

The league leaders play their game in hand at West Ham on Wednesday before hosting Southampton on Saturday, with Spurs welcoming the champions the following day.

If both teams keep winning, Jurgen Klopp’s men can clinch the title if they avoid defeat at the Etihad on April 4 with six games still remaining – breaking United’s record.

But according to The Athletic, Liverpool will only lift the trophy a month later after their final league game at Anfield, against Chelsea on May 4.

SunSport understands if the title is decided before the final game of the season, typically the trophy will be lifted on the winner's final home game of the season.

The league leaders travel to Newcastle on their final game of the season.

But it is claimed they are already planning dates for a victory parade behind the scenes, despite Klopp and his players insisting the title race is not yet over.

A route has to be agreed in advance with Liverpool City Council because of the road closures it would bring.

After Liverpool clinched their sixth Champions League trophy in June around a million fans lined the streets in the celebratory parade.

With the club expecting to finally end their 30-year run without a league title, a first Prem trophy could draw even greater crowds.

It is reported that Monday May 18 could be the date for the parade, 12 days before the Champions League final in Istanbul.
