A former gay conversion therapist is now in a fight to stop the practice after announcing he's gay.

John Smid helped run Love In Action for 22 years – one of the largest Christian gay conversion organisations in America.

Now, John, former director of the Tennessee group, has revealed he had to suppress his own gay feelings as part of his work.

He described how members of the conversion group worked off the theory gay people or members of the LGBTQ were 'broken' and 'needed to be fixed'.

Speaking to 9News , he said: "As Christian leaders we believed that we had the authority of the bible.

"We did not admit or come to grips with how deeply harmful it is when you start working with someone's psyche.

"I had to suppress my gay feelings."

John said he is now ashamed of the damage he caused hundreds of young people and is determined to expose the conversion therapy and the long-term psychological damage it causes.

He is currently in contact with hundreds of former victims of Love In Action.
