London has been hit by a series of bomb scares on the day voters go to the polls in European elections.

Whitehall was shut after a suspicious package was found, while polling stations in Highgate and Kingston were earlier closed off.

A World War 2 ordinance device was blamed for the Kingston evacuation.

And the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the incident in Highgate, North London, has been stood down.

Meanwhile police said that a suspect package was being investigated in Whitehall, close to Downing Street.

Posting on Twitter the London police force wrote: "Temporary road closures in place around Whitehall whist suspect item assessed. Police attended at 1201hrs today. Specialist officers are now in attendance. Thank you for your patience"
