EMILY PRESCOTT: Fergie rides to the rescue for best pal’s charity trek, offering to drive a Winnebago from Land’s End to John O’Groats

She’s had several jobs since leaving the Royal Family: Mills & Boon author, Weight Watchers spokeswoman, TV correspondent… and now the Duchess of York can add another entry to her CV: Winnebago driver.

Sarah Ferguson has gamely volunteered to join the support crew when her friend, the Countess of Bathurst, embarks on a charity bike ride from Land’s End to John o’ Groats in September.

Getting behind the wheel of the motorhome means Fergie will be providing vital back-up during the 1,200-mile trip to raise money for the Countess’s new charity, the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals (NFRSA). Sarah, 63, might even take the Queen’s corgis along for the ride, since she adopted Sandy and Muick after her late Majesty died last September.

‘They are very supportive of the NFRSA,’ Fergie joked to me at the charity’s launch last week.

However, the corgis were not at the party at Christie’s auction house in Central London – even though plenty of labrador puppies training to be service dogs were there – with Sarah explaining: ‘Sandy and Muick would chase the puppies.’

Of her stint as Winnebago driver, the Duchess added: ‘I’m delighted to do this work with Lady B especially because I just can’t bear to think that these animals have served us so well and then there’s no one to look after them.’ She added that she was happy to help as ‘we’re only as good as the team around us’.

Fergie previously showed her support for the work of the charity by posing with its fundraising calendars early this year.

And the Winnebago won’t be the only help Lady Bathurst, 57, will be getting, as she’ll be doing her challenge on a £10,000 Porsche e-bike, which can nip along at 15mph thanks to its battery-powered motor.

Fergie was not the only famous face at the NFRSA launch, as other attendees included Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes and Dragons’ Den star Deborah Meaden, who bid £2,100 for the chance to watch a police alsatian being trained by handlers in the West Midlands.
