NANCY Pelosi has served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives on two separate occasions.

As speaker of the House, Pelosi is second in the presidential line of succession, after Vice President Kamala Harris.

Where is Nancy Pelosi today?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats are pushing back this week after Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert made recent "Islamophobic comments."

The statement comes after Boebert referenced Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar as a"Jihad Squad" member on several occasions.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is also being criticized for his lack of response to Boebert's "blatantly racist" comments.

In a joint statement, Democrats said, "Leader McCarthy and the entire House Republican Leadership’s repeated failure to condemn inflammatory and bigoted rhetoric from members of their conference is outrageous."

Pelosi was among those who criticized Boebert after she posted another comment via social media on Thanksgiving that said the Capitol Police don't need to fear Omar, as long as she isn't carrying a "backpack."

"Racism and bigotry of any form, including Islamophobia, must always be called out, confronted, and condemned in any place it is found," Democrats said in their joint statement.

"This is particularly true in the halls of Congress, which are the very heart of our democracy.

"Congresswoman Boebert's repeated, ongoing and targeted Islamophobic comments and actions against another Member of Congress, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, are both deeply offensive and concerning."

What is Pelosi’s role in the United States House of Representatives

As House Speaker, Pelosi is the leader of the Representatives and is simultaneously the House's presiding leader of the body's majority party.

She has enforced a mandatory face mask policy on the House floor.

As House Speaker, Pelosi usually doesn't preside over debates – instead, that duty is delegated to House members from the majority party.

Pelosi was elected to her fourth (second consecutive) term as Speaker of the House on January 3, 2021.

The Democrat from California first served as House Speaker from 2007 to 2011, and then again in 2019 to present.
