PRINCE Charles has said that he considers himself a “peacemaker” and wants to visit Iran to help soothe bubbling tensions.

The Prince of Wales believes that he could play an important role in helping to smooth over British relations with Tehran.

Charles was making his first visit in 30 years to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, when he opened up on the international issues.

London and Tehran have a strained relationship, which was worsened after Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was imprisoned in 2016 over allegations of spying.

The British-Iranian citizen denies the accusations, but has remained locked up in the country for the last four years.

It is thought that Charles has played a key role in the issues that have been causing the Royal Family public issues.

He was heavily involved at the Sandringham summit where the details of Harry and Meghan moving to Canada were thrashed out.

'PEACEMAKER'

Speaking to the Sunday Times he revealed that he had been praying for peace, and said: “I have spent much of my life trying to bring people together. I’d rather be a peacemaker.

“I do think the most important thing (in the region) is a just and lasting peace.

“Yes, I do pray. I pray very hard all the time. Inshallah.”

Charles, 71, last visited Iran in 2004 with the British Red Cross after an earthquake destroyed the city of Bam.

Palace officials believe that Charles feels he will be able to encourage a “dialogue” between the two countries, despite world leaders expressing a need to crack down on Tehran.

He added: “Yes, obviously I would like to go. I know that Iran has been such an important part of the world for so many centuries and has contributed so much to human knowledge, culture, poetry, art.

“I mean really remarkable people. And I have always been fascinated by Islamic culture and architecture and craftsmanship for a long time.”

The last official royal visit to the country was by the late Queen Mother in 1975.
