Two ‘animal-loving’ police officers in Wales used a pair of scissors from their first aid kit to rescue a deer that was trapped in a rope swing.

Police bodycam footage shows the stricken animal with a blue rope tangled around its antlers in a field near Powis Castle, in Welshpool, Powys, at around 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon.

While the police do not usually respond to calls about animal emergencies, two members of the Dyfed-Powys Roads Policing Unit – PC Marcus Wright and PC Dave Wilkinson – were in the area and decided to investigate after receiving a call from a member of the public.

When the officers arrived at the scene they found the animal’s antlers tangled around the rope swing which were causing it to be pulled off the ground when it tried to run free

Armed only with only a pair of scissors, the officers managed to calm the animal down before eventually cutting the rope to set it free.

The footage shows PC Wright and PC Wilkinson approaching the deer. It is foaming at the mouth and swings by its antlers as it is lifted off the ground each time it tries to run away.

The pair of officers attempt to calm the animal but it is spooked and continues running around.

Both officers try to get close to the deer, holding it by its antlers, but their efforts are unsuccessful when it kicks out and tries to run away.

After a few attempts, the officers manage to calm the tiring animal, before PC Wilkinson cuts the rope with scissors from their first aid kit.

After setting the animal free, PC Wilkinson said: ‘I saw the call come on the system and that it had been referred to the RSPCA.

‘But as animal lovers I suggested to Marcus that we go and see if we could help the animal and prevent any suffering that it was going through.’

When they arrived, they said the deer was in a distressed state, frothing from its mouth and breathing heavily.

Eventually, the two ‘animal loving’ officers manage to set the deer free and it runs off into the field

‘The poor thing was swinging by its antler and must have been exhausted and terrified,’ said PC Wright.

‘Fortunately, it calmed pretty quickly which enabled us to get to work untangling its antler so it could be freed.

‘Within 15 minutes it was freed, but it sat there for a little while to catch its breath and then it was off.

‘As animal lovers, it was great to see, and a very rewarding experience for us both.’
