Washington: US President Donald Trump is using the Australian government's campaign to deter illegal immigrants with confronting posters to support his own controversial border protection agenda.

Trump, on his way to the G20 in Osaka, Japan, on Wednesday sent a tweet out to his 61.4 million followers with examples of Australia's posters.

"These flyers depict Australia's policy on Illegal Immigration," Trump wrote.

"Much can be learned!"

One of the Australian posters has a photo of a boat on the open ocean and in red letters warns: "NO WAY. YOU WILL NOT MAKE AUSTRALIA HOME".

Another says: "Australia's borders are closed to illegal immigration".

The president's strong stance against illegal immigrants crossing from Mexico into the US has become a major issue ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

An image of bodies of a father and daughter who drowned while trying to cross the Rio Grande River has highlighted the humanitarian crisis on the border, where under resourced facilities are overwhelmed with immigrants.

Revelations that detained immigrant teenagers were left to care for detained toddlers has further infuriated Congress, with Republican-controlled Senate and Democratic-controlled house advancing competing bills to provide needed funding on the border.
