WHO could watch the children who took part in yesterday’s climate strike and not admire them for caring so much about the future of the planet?

Of course, we should all be deeply concerned about the environment and climate change.

But I wonder how many of the children who marched yesterday, and the parents and teachers who supported them, really know what they were marching for.

The climate strike is not quite the spontaneous popular protest that it is made out to be.

It is coordinated by an organisation called  FridaysfortheFuture which  sets dates for strikes,  provides sample posters and stickers. It is not clear who runs it, but it also operates two websites: globalclimatestrike.net and peoplesdemands.org.

On the latter, it publishes what passes as its manifesto. Read it, and it becomes very clear what lies behind the climate strikes.

ANTI-CAPITALIST MOVEMENT

It is really the anti-capitalist movement — the lot who used to demand an end to globalisation — in green disguise.

Astonishingly, it opposes not just nuclear energy but also “mega hydro” (ie large dams and tidal power), biofuels and carbon capture and storage.

These are all technologies central to the Government’s ambition to cut UK carbon emissions to net zero by 2050.

Yet FridaysfortheFuture wants the world to move to zero carbon energy by 2030 — 20 years earlier.

How on Earth does it expect to achieve that? It wants humanity to return to living in pre-industrial conditions.

And it wants to “support non-market approaches to climate action”.

In other words, it wants some kind of primitive socialist society.

The trouble is that if we went back to living in pre-industrial conditions we would very rapidly end up with pre-industrial levels of hunger, disease and child mortality.

There is another way to tackle climate change, which is to invest in renewable energy and other low-carbon tech through a liberal, market economy to build a proper energy infrastructure.

Children are right to be concerned about the planet, but they might care to take a closer look at the  ideology behind their climate strikes.
