A driver survived a car crash only to be electrocuted to death by a downed power line after getting out of his wrecked vehicle, police said.
Fabian Garnica, 20, was driving with his girlfriend Destiny Wallace on Saturday when he reportedly slammed his car into a utility pole in Texas City, Texas.
Both Garnica and Wallace, 20, survived the crash. Garnica then got out of his car to assess the damage, and was then fatally electrocuted by the fallen power line.
When police arrived, Wallace was sitting on a nearby vehicle, Texas City Police Department spokesman Corporal Allen Bjerke told People.
She was then taken to a local hospital – where she learned in the emergency room she was pregnant with Garnica’s baby.
In a Facebook post following Garnica’s death, Wallace wrote: ‘How do I go through givin(g) birth (without) him when that’s something he always wanted to experience.’
In another post, she said: ‘I’m in the process of getting discharged from the hospital just waiting to sign the papers & (I’m) so nervous, I’m sweating and shaking. I’m scared to walk out this hospital & face reality.’
According to Wallace, Garnica died after he was shocked by a wire that ‘was hanging and touched his hair.’
Police are still investigating the car crash that saw the car ‘abruptly’ leave the road, according to Bjerke.
Investigators are looking at a possible mechanical failure, blown tire or issue with the steering wheel.
Authorities also warned drivers to stay in their car after a crash.
Texas City Emergency Medical Services Director Wendell Wiley told KTRK: ‘If you’re in a vehicle, you need to stay inside the vehicle until we arrive on scene.’
‘We can assess and see if the power lines are still hot. If they are, we can contact the light company. Your safest place is inside the vehicle,’ Wendell continued.
A GoFundMe campaign has been organized to raise money for Garnica’s funeral expenses, which says he left behind two children, although it is unclear if that includes Wallace’s unborn child.
