A man is believed to have killed himself by setting himself on fire inside a parked car in Brooklyn, authorities and police sources said Monday.
The 2018 Honda Accord went up in flames around 2:45 a.m. on the sidewalk of 39th Street near 12th Avenue in Borough Park, according to an FDNY spokesman and video posted to Twitter.
When the fire was extinguished, authorities discovered the unidentified man unconscious and sitting in the driver’s seat, cops said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sources within the Jewish community confirmed the man is an 18-year-old Hasidic yeshiva student. His family has not yet been notified.
Investigators recovered video of the man lighting the fire inside the car, according to law enforcement sources. He supposedly texted a friend telling him he picked that spot to park his car because he lives nearby, the sources added.
Police suspect the man killed himself, adding that there was evidence indicating the fire was deliberately set, cop sources said. Additional circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately provided.
The city medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.
