Piers Morgan has been presenting Good Morning Britain on ITV since November 2015 and he is one of the most outspoken hosts. But the former newspaper editor has stepped back from his role for the time being, as he is taking an extended break. Fans are wondering when Piers Morgan will be back and Express.co.uk has everything you need to know?

Why is Piers Morgan not on GMB today and when is he back?

Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid have been the faces of morning television for many households across the country.

The pair will be stepping out of the spotlight as they enjoy a few weeks away for the summer.

Morgan and Reid usually take some time off during the school holidays to spend time with their families.

The host confirmed he will be back on the programme in September, but fans are worried he may not renew his contract next year.

Addressing claims he may be leaving the talk show, Piers said: “I’m not actually leaving [at the end of this year], next year, possibly.”

Contract negotiations are still ongoing so fans are yet to find out exactly how long he will stay on the show.

Eamonn Holmes said in an interview earlier this summer that Morgan could leave at any time, and suggested his days on the series could be numbered.

Fans are yet to find out who will be replacing Morgan when he takes a back seat, but a strong contender would be one half of Richard and Judy – Richard Madeley.

He regularly appears as a guest host on the show, so he knows how to keep the GMB viewers hooked.

Another possible host could be Ben Shepard, who joined GMB back in 2014 and fills in for Morgan on Thursdays.

He also filled in for Morgan when he was isolating having displayed coronavirus symptoms earlier this year.

Holmes himself could also fill the gap as he is still a much-loved TV host, who rejoined the show in 2017.

Other possible names include Jeremy Kyle, Rylan Clark-Neal and Jeremy Clarkson.

A representative for GMB told Express.co.uk Piers and Susanna a range of presenters will be covering for the stars over the summer.

Morgan shared a photo of himself with Kate Garraway after she made an appearance on GMB.

Ben Shepard also wished Kate well as her husband Derek is still recovering from severe coronavirus symptoms.

Shepard said: “Really great to see @kategarraway chatting with @susannareid100 @piersmorgan and @DrHilaryJones. You can tell it was special, Piers even let Kate interrupt.”

Earlier this year, Piers said he had signed a new contract with the ITV show meaning he will remain on GMB until at least the end of 2021.

But fans will have to get used to a couple of months without the star as he will be off air until September.

The official Good Morning Britain Twitter account shared some of Morgan and Reid’s most iconic moments on the show.

Morgan said: “It’s been a very long year and we are going to take a little break and we’ll be back at the start of September.

“We want to thank all the viewers for all the feedback you have given us – we take all feedback, we are a democracy and we are allowed to have an opinion.”

Reid then thanked the team personally for looking after the pair, before Morgan made a joke about the Government still not putting forward representatives to talk on the show.
