WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Shetland.

Shetland series seven will be actor Douglas Henshall’s last as DI Jimmy Perez as he announced earlier this year he would be leaving the drama for good. As the season reached its halfway point on BBC One on Wednesday, August 24, fans are expecting to see the beginnings of how Jimmy is going to make his exit. But in a shocking turn of events, it wasn’t Jimmy’s life that seemed to be in danger after all.

What happened to Tosh in Shetland?

Shetland returned for its seventh outing on Wednesday, August 17, with a new case for the team to get to grips with.

This time, it revolves around the disappearance of teenager Connor Cairn (played by Nicholas Nunn) after his mum Rachel (Shauna Macdonald) reported him missing.

Things quickly escalated as Connor’s girlfriend Bryd (Sorcha Groundsell) was found dead the day after she received a text from Connor’s phone, asking to meet.

So unsurprisingly, Jimmy and DS Alison ‘Tosh’ MacIntosh (Alison O’Donnell) are determined to get to the bottom of it before anyone else is killed.

At the end of season seven, episode three, the team find what Connor had referred to as his “safe place”.

It turned out to be a caravan situated in a remote spot on the Shetland mainland.

Tosh believed she might find some evidence of Connor’s whereabouts or even the teen himself in the caravan.

Little did Tosh know that this discovery was about to put her life in grave danger.

Upon entry, Tosh saw some strange drawings and nautical charts dotted around the caravan.

She called for Perez to join her so he could give his opinion on what she was looking at.

This is when Tosh saw the large chemical drums, wires and a timer counting down and panic set in.

Realising it was about to explode, she frantically tried to escape the locked caravan with Perez and Sandy (Steven Robertson) unable to help get her out.

This is when the caravan exploded, bursting into a ball of flames, leaving viewers stunned.

So was Tosh able to escape in time or has the detective actually been killed off?

As of yet, it hasn’t been officially confirmed Tosh is dead or if actress O’Donnell is leaving the drama.

Typically, once a major cast member such as O’Donnell makes their exit, they usually issue a statement.

Further proof Tosh survived the explosion can be found on O’Donnell’s IMDb page.

According to her profile, Tosh will feature in all six episodes of Shetland season seven.

But how would have Tosh managed to escape the explosion and who is responsible for the ticking time bomb?

Shetland season 7 continues every Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
