UK’s 2023 Eurovision Song Contest entry, Mae Muller has been handed a bitter blow ahead of her hotly-anticipated performance at the Grand Final.

All eyes will be on the 25-year-old pop star when she takes to the stage on Saturday (May 13) to perform her tune I Wrote A Song.

And while Mae is no doubt gearing herself up for possibly the biggest performance of her life – it doesn’t seem she can replicate the success of Sam Ryder – who placed second in 2022.

Ahead of the final, which is taking place in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine, Mae has been issued a major blow.

Bookmakers Ladbrokes have priced Mae at just 25/1 to finish the nights with zero points – while 3/1 says she will finish last.

While elsewhere, 40/1 reckon the singer-songwriter will do one better than Sam, and top the chart.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "UK-backers should look away now, as Mae Muller is currently more likely to finish the night on zero points as she is to win."

He added: "Patriotic punters might be behind the United Kingdom in Liverpool, but the odds suggest a third bottom-place finish in four years could well be on the cards."

It comes after Mae revealed to Daily Star she reckons her grandad is supporting her from beyond the grave.

The singer was a baby when Robert died. But years on, she feels a connection between them.

And she’s convinced he’ll watch her fly the flag for the UK in Liverpool this weekend.

Mae said: “My grandad passed away when I was about three months old.

“So I haven’t been able to talk to him about doing Eurovision. But I am hoping he is here with me and he is looking down. I hope he is proud of me. I am sure he is.

Mae has been working around the clock to fine-tune her performance of I Wrote A Song, even hiring a space in Liverpool for extra rehearsals.

"I’ve been going over and over the performance,” she says. “I want to be prepared. I’ve sung the song hundreds of times and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

"It means I will be able to enjoy it on the night. I haven’t had any injuries so far… touch wood. I’m in one piece. I’m hoping it stays that way.

“I always have honey, lemon and ginger tea before a performance. It calms me and gets my vocal cords ready to go. And then I like to have five minutes of zen before I go on stage.”

Mae will be one of 26 acts competing at the final in front of more than 160 million viewers and she admits: “There are nerves. It would be strange if there weren’t. But more than anything, I’m just excited.”
