With Spider-Man: Far From Home on the horizon, fans are prepping for an action-packed and emotionally stirring follow-up to Avengers: Endgame. Spider-Man: Far From Home will hit the silver screen in a little over a month and mark the initiation of the MCU’s phase four. Expectations are high, and if anyone is destined to deliver, it’s Tony Stark’s protege.

*‘Avengers: Endgame’ spoilers ahead*

Based on the conclusion witnessed in Avengers: Endgame and the recently dropped trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home, fans know that Peter Parker will have to come to terms with Tony Stark’s death.

Retaining a focus on Parker’s internal battle between his heroic responsibilities and an intense yearning for an ordinary teenage life, Far From Home – like many of its Marvel predecessors – will be a superhero movie with a lot more to offer than kicks, flips, punches, and quippy remarks (even though we all love Parker for his slick-tongued personality and knack for Hollywood trivia).

With Tony Stark gone, fans wonder if Peter Parker will bond to Mysterio and whether or not such a bond would be beneficial to the young savior. Lucky for fans, Holland is a bit of a blabbermouth when it comes to spoiling movies. This time, unless he has very cleverly deluded his fanbase, he divulged details concerning the relationship between Mysterio and Peter Parker.

Tom Holland on Mysterio’s true nature in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’

During an interview with Slash Film, Tom Holland spoke about working with Jake Gyllenhaal and the dynamic between Peter Parker and Mysterio. When discussing his time on set with Gyllenhaal, Holland stated:

“It’s interesting, because when you hear the word “Mysterio” as a Spider-Man fan, you immediately think “villain.” That’s not the case in our film. He’s sort of a new addition to this world of heroes, he’s sort of my teammate throughout the movie.”

While rumors have been circling that Mysterio is bound to turn evil (due to the character’s nature in the comic books), it appears that those behind the production have decided to take the film in a different direction.

The writers may have felt that making Mysterio a villain would have been too predictable. Either way, the suspense tied to the character’s true agenda has now been removed thanks to Holland.

Tom Holland talks dynamic between Peter Parker and Mysterio in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’

Unless Holland is lying, becoming a master manipulator and spoiler evader overnight, Mysterio and Peter Parker will possess a “big brother, little brother” relationship. According to Holland, the movie plays out as follows:

“Nick Fury is the head teacher who is constantly telling me off. I don’t want to really be there. I want to go on holiday, and Mysterio is always the one sort of sticking up for me and patting me on the back and telling me I did a good job.”

So, as far as Holland is concerned, the mystery behind Mysterio is not meant to be taken at face value when it comes to Far From Home. Who knows, maybe Gyllenhaal will appear in more than one MCU film as a good guy. Or, maybe he’s slated to turn evil somewhere down the line, augmenting the impact on Peter Parker to an unmanageable extent.

Peter Parker, still dealing with the blow of Iron Man’s sacrifice, will have to rise from his defeated state and reclaim his place as a super in the upcoming summer blockbuster. And it looks like Mysterio, at least in this film, will be there to cheer him on.
