Tom Hanks was last seen portraying Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and a World War II navy captain in Greyhound, and will next turn his attention to the Old West. He stars in the new western News of the World, which is directed by Paul Greengrass, who previously worked with Hanks on Captain Phillips, as well as making three Bourne movies.

Hanks plays a former Civil War captain named Jefferson Kyle Kidd, who at the end of the war moves to a small town to become a writer. He encounters a young girl named Joanna (Helena Zengel), who was taken by Kiowa people many years earlier, and agrees to return her to her aunt and uncle hundreds of miles away. Westerns don’t come along very often, but this one looks like big, rousing entertainment, with Hanks in the familiar role as a kindly but determined man on a dangerous mission. News of the World also stars Elizabeth Marvel (True Grit), Ray McKinnon (Deadwood), Mare Winningham (The Outsider), and Neil Sandilands (The Flash). It his theaters on December 25.

In a statement to promote the movie, Hanks was full of praise for his young co-star. “I cannot stress enough the incredible power of young Helena Zengel,” he said. “I believe actors are born. You can’t learn how to be an actor, you just are. Her silences, her eyes, her instincts–she may have no sense of what the rules of acting are, yet she already knows them implicitly.”

Hanks will also star in an upcoming biopic of Elvis Presley, directed by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge). Hanks will play Presley’s longtime manager Colonel Tom Parker, while Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) will portray the King of Rock and Roll. The movie was one of many that were shutdown earlier this year, and Hanks himself had to self-isolate in Australia after he contracted COVID-19 during production. The film resumed shooting last month.
