The political commentator slammed those who criticise the climate change group for their actions as she suggested that “Apartheid” would still be in place today without people such as Insulate Britain protesters taking action for change. Nine Insulate Britain activists were handed down three to four months sentences on Wednesday after judges found them in contempt of an injunction issued against the group.

The commentator told Jeremy Vine: “These are not villains these are good people!

“They are pensioners, they are decent folk, they care about the environment.”

She went on to claim how “none of us have taken this issue very seriously” as she called for more action to tackle climate change.

Ms Alibhai-Brown also slammed climate conference COP26 for “making promises” that she suggested was not enough.

But stressed how each and every Briton must take individual action to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

And using a personal anecdote, she noted: “I was so lazy, I used my car for the shortest of trips and now I walk.”

The commentator went on to claim “Apartheid”, the Poll Tax and the vote for women would have continued to the present day “without such people” as Insulate Britain protesting for change.

The nine members from the group were jailed at the High Court in London on Tuesday after they admitted breaching an injunction by taking part in a blockade at junction 25 of the M25 on 8 October.

Ben Buse, 36, Roman Paluch-Machnik, 28, Oliver Rock, 41, Emma Smart, 44, Tim Speers, 36, and James Thomas, 47, all received four-month sentences.

While Ana Heyatawin, 58, and Louis McKechnie, 20, were jailed for three months.

Following the sentencing, the judge slammed: “The defendants, or some of them, seem to want to be martyrs for their cause, and the media campaign surrounding this hearing appears designed to suggest this.

Insulate Britain is an offshoot of Extinction Rebellion, they are calling for better insulation for UK homes.

They say Britain’s leaky housing stock is contributing disproportionately to greenhouse gas emissions in this country.

The activists have blocked motorways, the Port of Dover, and roads outside Parliament as part of their campaign with many demonstrators gluing themselves to tarmac and sometimes each other.

Despite opposition from the British public who have resorted to dragging them off the road, the group vow to continue taking action until their demands are met by the government.
