While the Star Wars sequel trilogy made a lot of money at the box office, some of the movies left a poor taste in a few fans’ mouths.
There were several reasons why some fans didn’t enjoy the sequels as much as other fans did, and The Rise of Skywalker had its share of issues, too. For example, since there’s a time skip between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, some fans complained that the characters should’ve looked more different.
However, other issues that some fans raised had to do with the revelations that The Rise of Skywalker made. Here’s a look at why some fans think that making Finn Force-sensitive was a bad idea.
A recap of Finn’s life
Like the movies showed, Finn was a stormtrooper who fought for the First Order. Like his comrades, he was kidnapped as a baby and brainwashed into being a soldier for the First Order. However, after an attack on Jakku, Finn decided to defect from the First Order.
After defecting, Finn helps the Resistance fight back against the First Order. He makes a lot of friends along the way, and he even managed to kill his former commander, Captain Phasma. Of course, he and his friends ultimately succeed, and they’re able to defeat their enemies and restore justice to the galaxy.
Throughout the movies, Finn seemed to be a fish out of water, as he was a former stormtrooper who was now fighting against his former friends. His story was interesting and compelling for that reason, but like fans on Reddit said, Lucasfilm may have ruined his story by making him Force-sensitive.
Finn’s subtle Force-sensitivity
As Syfy wrote, J.J. Abrams, who directed The Force Awakens as well as The Rise of Skywalker, confirmed that Finn thought that he was Force-sensitive. Throughout the movies, Finn experienced a lot of “feelings,” which, in the Star Wars universe, almost always related to the Force.
For example, in The Rise of Skywalker, Finn talked to Jannah, who was also a former stormtrooper, about how they both got a “feeling” that they needed to defect from the First Order. Finn also talked about how he thought the Force was working to bring him and Rey together, according to Syfy, but Finn’s Force-sensitivity doesn’t stop there.
Later in The Rise of Skywalker, Finn also seemed to know exactly where he needed to go in order to beat the Final Order. This is an example of Finn knowing something that he shouldn’t really know which, like Syfy wrote, meant that he’s Force-sensitive.
Why fans think his Force-sensitivity made Finn a worse character
Like Star Wars fans on Reddit wrote, this Force-sensitivity actually made him a less compelling character. That’s because rather than Finn having to make tough choices, some Star Wars fans think that the Force ultimately made those choices for him.
Like one fan wrote on Reddit: “In fact making him defect because “he had a feeling” and making it so the force made him leave rather than him leaving on his own makes his character worse.”
Fans blamed other fans who wanted Finn to be a Jedi for this revelation, and some fans agreed with that sentiment. Like another fan wrote, “There was no need for another Jedi character. You don’t just make everyone a Jedi because you like Jedi.”
With that being said, not all fans thought that this was a bad idea. Some fans think that the Force doesn’t actually force anyone to do anything, and it just gives suggestions.
In Finn’s case, the Force may have spoken to him about defecting, but he was the one that made the choice to go through with it.
