In The Handmaid’s Tale, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and Commander Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) fell in love while living at the Waterford household in Gilead. The two characters make up the show’s primary love story, and in the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale, Nick and June had a young daughter named Nichole.

Moss and Minghella frequently share their love for Nick and June’s relationship while promoting the show. In an interview with Awards Focus, Minghella revealed working with Moss was his “favorite thing” about season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Max Minghella loves working with Elisabeth Moss on ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

For season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale, Moss made her directorial debut. She directed three episodes, “The Crossing,” “Testimony,” and “Progress.” Minghella appeared in two of the episodes, “The Crossing” and “Progress.” Both episodes solidified June and Nick’s love for one another and featured romantic scenes between the two characters.

Speaking with Awards Focus, Minghella shared that working with Moss for her directorial debut was a highlight for him while filming the show’s fourth season.

“It was my favorite thing because she really elicited the best work from the actors. She has a remarkable ability to make you feel safe, and step out of the traditional boundaries of the show,” Minghella said. “She also has an incredible visual flare, like in episode three, doing these complicated set pieces like trains flying off the rails while also directing intimate character work.”

Max Minghella says Nick is ‘a spy’ in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

In The Handmaid’s Tale, Nick was recruited by the Sons of Jacob and became a driver for the prolific Waterford family. During the show’s third season, he was promoted to the role of a Commander. Nick is even more powerful in the show’s fourth season, but he still is not a high-ranking Commander.

Due to his past with Gilead, fans sometimes see Nick as a questionable character. However, Minghella thinks that Nick does the best he can given his surroundings.

“I don’t think Nick is as complicated as people perceive him to be. He’s always trying to protect June to the best of his abilities, but sometimes there’s two bad options, like in order to protect her he has to choose between two evils,” he told Awards Focus.

Minghella continued, “People forget Nick is a spy, and we’re four seasons into the show, so expecting the audience to retain all of the history of these characters is way too much. Ultimately his intentions are in protecting her.”

Max Minghella and Elisabeth Moss have ‘a natural chemistry’

While some fans may doubt Nick’s individual character, there is no doubting Nick and June’s love for one another. Part of this is because Moss and Minghella are so believable onscreen.

Speaking with Awards Focus, Minghella shared that he has “a natural chemistry” with Moss “that makes it quite easy and fun to be honest. She’s one of the great actors alive.”

All four seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale are available to stream on Hulu.
