Appearing on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, the Emmerdale star-turned-farmer reflected on his time on the popular BBC competition and explained that Strictly Come Dancing “consumed” his work and family life, but detailed how he “allows” projects to become consuming because it allows him to perform at his best.

Ahead of tonight’s week three results, which will see Strictly Come Dancing contestants face an anxious wait while the result come in, former winner Kelvin recalled his time on the show.

He can relate all too well to the intensity of being on the seasonal favourite, having won in 2019.

As Alan asked him about his experience and showed some clips from his time on the series, the former actor stated: “It brings back such great memories when I watch that back.”

The 38-year-old continued: “I’ve not seen that back for a good while but you know, for me, what a great show.

“And for me personally what a great moment it was to kind of get there.”

“It seems to be all-consuming when you do it,” Alan pointed out.

“Absolutely,” Kelvin agreed. “And I think it really depends on the sort of person you are.

“Certainly for me, anything I do I kind of embrace it and allow it to consume me because I think that’s the only way I can get the best out of myself.

“And it’s pretty tricky. I think if you’ve got quite a busy work life and family life as well…

“But we were doing do 12, 13 hours a day every day. So it is absolutely consuming.”

Before his Strictly victory, Kelvin starred as Andy Sugden on Emmerdale for 20 years.

A soap staple, he decided to leave the beloved role in 2016.

Kelvin, along with his wife Liz, moved his two young children from their home in early 2021 so the family could fully embrace the farming life.

His new show, Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure, started on BBC One early last year.

The Strictly winner bought a 120-acre farm with no farming experience whatsoever.

Although he had played a farmer in the ITV soap for years, taking on his own real-life farm was a completely new experience for him.

Earlier this year, he detailed on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch what the hardest part of his new venture has been.

Talking about a typical day, Liz explained: “Well, first and foremost, we sort the kids out, we have to get them to where they need to be.”

“That’s the hardest part of the day!” Kelvin cut in, laughing as his wife agreed: “Yeah, that is the hardest part.”

Love Your Garden with Alan Titchmarsh airs Sundays at 9.30pm on ITV.
