Strictly Come Dancing crowned Hamza Yassin and partner Jowita Przystal 2022 champions before they lifted the Glitterball trophy. Helen Skelton was hot on his tail to win the competition but unfortunately just missed out. Despite losing, Helen admitted she has an incredible journey with the show helping her through some “dark days”.
Helen appeared on the ITV chatshow Lorraine on Monday morning after a busy weekend with Strictly.
Touching on the one thing that she wanted to take from the show was to “make my kids proud”.
She explained to Ranvir Singh: “Look I just wanted to make my kids proud. So we didn’t quite bring home that trophy but we made memories that would make a lifetime.
“Winning would have been the perfect way to say thank you for the good that Strictly did for her emotionally.
“If I could bottle that atmosphere from Saturday, it’ll see me through any dark days. It was just the most wonderful feeling.
“It just goes to show what happens when you surround yourself with good people.”
Earlier this year, Helen split with her husband Richie Myler who she shares children Ernie, seven, Louis, five, and 11-month-old Elsie.
She wrote on her Instagram account at the time: “Very sad to say that Richie and I are no longer a couple. He has left the family home.
“We will be doing our best to co-parent our small children.”
During the BBC dancing competition, Helen’s confidence flourished as she found herself again with the help of her dance partner Gorka Marquez.
She gushed over how “grateful” she was for their friendship and said: “I am so grateful to that man, he is a credit to that show and a credit to his family.
“That show pushes all the buttons. It’s so emotional. He never made me say things I didn’t want to. He never made me pull the thread that would have made me unravel.”
Fans were left devastated that Helen and Gorka missed out on the Glitterball and took to their Twitter accounts on Saturday night to express their sadness.
Melissa Aaron stated: “#StrictlyComeDancing aw not gonna lie I am gutted for Helen & Gorka but congrats to Hamza and Jowita.”
Jonathan Cheetham fumed: “Gorka and Helen deserved to win #scd #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing.”
@pricklypear_16 added: “#strictlycomedancing Helen and Gorka were robbed IMO.” (sic)
@JoJo_P_87 said: “Nah gutted for Helen & Gorka #StrictlyComeDancing #SCD.” (sic)
Viewers have called for the voting figures to be made public after Hamza’s win, many wanting to know how far ahead the vote was considering he was at the bottom of the leaderboard.
Hamza and Jowita hoped to wow with their Salsa, Show Dance and Couples Choice, but their Show Dance was labelled “underwhelming”.
As a result, the pair received just 34 points for the performance, the lowest of the night, leaving them with 113 overall on the leaderboard.
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
