Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) would do anything to protect or defend the woman he loves, Carla Connor (Alison King) in Coronation Street – but when her secret situation means that he could take drastic and life changing action, will he be forced to call things quits?

Chelsey and her associate Jordan from the squat Carla stayed in after she disappeared from Weatherfield up the pressure on her, blackmailing her over things she did and drugs she owes Jordan for – but when Carla decides to be honest with Peter, he stands by her side.

After Jordan and Chelsey make another appearance at the Rovers, Carla is buoyed by Peter’s support and defiantly doesn’t bow to the blackmail. The odious pair are thrown out but it seems the matter isn’t quite finished with Peter.

With Carla having been rocked and the risk very much there for her to end up back in the dark place she found herself in last year, Peter is acting shiftily when he returns home to the flat later.

A news report comes on the radio describing a serious assault on two people on an estate – but is it referring to Jordan and Chelsey? As Peter secretly switches off the report before Carla hears about it, how far has he gone to step up for her?

If he has indeed committed a violent assault, he could be facing serious trouble and even a prison sentence. Finding himself in an unthinkable situation, will he feel the time is right to cut ties with Carla to protect her from the agony ahead?

Corrie boss Iain MacLeod recently warned that this chapter would provide a real challenge for the couple to survive – but hinted they have the strength to come through it.

It may not be an easy ride though.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘Ultimately there is no prospect of them splitting up in the foreseeable. I tend to feel that they are Burton and Taylor. Will they be together in 10 years’ time? Who knows? They’re in one of their passionate “I will defend them to the death” phases of their relationship, and I like them like that.’
