On Tuesday, Dan Walker and Sally Nugent were back in the studio to bring viewers the latest headlines. The duo chatted with Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng about the rising energy prices, as well as comedian Tom Allen about the upcoming series of The Great British Bake Off. However, midway through the programme, Sally introduced a new member to the BBC team.

Before she discussed climate change, Sally introduced new BBC presenter, Justin Rowlatt.

“Before we talk about all of this, is the BBC’s new Climate Editor. Congratulations, Justin Rowlatt.”

“Thank you very much,” he replied as Sally continued: “Morning, lovely to see you.

“As Dan mentioned big conference coming up very soon. World leaders will all be in the UK about what to do next.”

She asked: “How important is it that we at home pay attention to what they are saying?”

Justin replied: “Well…I mean they have just made me the Climate Editor so of course, I’d say it’s the most important conference in the world.

“It is, by the way, if everybody turns up, it will be the biggest gathering of world leaders ever in British history.

“So, it’s huge by any standards. The issue at the heart of it is tackling global warming.”

Tuesday marked Justin’s first stint on-camera for BBC Breakfast but he’s sure to join the pair on the famous sofa again in the future.

Later in the interview, BBC Breakfast played a clip of Justin laying in a casket of compost.

As it cut back to the studio, Dan joked: “Did you know you’d be doing that when you signed up to your new job?”

“Listen, perhaps that isn’t the piece I would have chosen to mark my role of Climate Editor for the BBC,” Justin replied.

Dan added: “There is a lot going on and you’re going to be covering a certain number of issues in the build-up to this huge conference.”

“Yeah, the plan is to run a number of pieces in the run-up to highlight some of the common issues,” the editor explained.

As Dan and Sally welcomed a new colleague, it comes after they bid an emotional farewell to Louise Minchin last week.

Louise decided to leave BBC Breakfast after 20 years of being a presenter.

Dan and Louise both got emotional as the pair said goodbye to each other.

Dan praised his co-host on her final episode, saying: “All of us here will miss you enormously.

“The programme will never ever be the same without you, Louise,” he remarked.

Louise thanked her co-star for his kind words and asked: “Can I say some thank yous now?”

“Okay, so I’ve written it down in case I forgot,” she explained. “Thank you first to Dan. Because of you, I’ve stayed much longer than I actually meant to, haven’t I? I mean, really longer.

“We’ve been through tough stories; we’ve been through tough programmes. The one thing that has been absolutely clear, you just said it, you’ve always had my back.

“You’ve made me laugh, you’ve made me roll my eyes, you’ve passed me tissues when I’ve cried.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
