Season 4 of Riverdale was meant to end very differently. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the season’s final three episodes weren’t finished. As a result, viewers didn’t get to see Archie, Veronica, Jughead, and Betty finish high school and embark upon their next adventure.

Even though Season 4 didn’t give us any closure, Riverdale is returning for a fifth season, and some major changes are taking place. Here’s what we know about Riverdale Season 5 so far.

There will be major time jump.

Perhaps the biggest revelation about Riverdale Season 5 so far is that the series will jump ahead into the future. Rather than turning into Riverdale: The College Years, the show is opting to fast forward until the gang has finished studying. Instead, we will likely see Bughead and Varchie navigating life in their twenties, which is more than a little exciting.

TVLine confirmed the time jump, and executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed, “We’ve been talking and planning on doing a time jump… and of course, usually time jumps happen in between seasons, because there’s a tease at the very end.” However, as the pandemic shut down production, Riverdale‘s time jump won’t be immediate.

Season 4’s missing episodes will be filmed for Season 5.

Rather than jumping ahead at the start of the new season, Riverdale Season 5 will begin with the episodes that weren’t filmed because of coronavirus. As Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine, “So what we’re doing is picking up right where we left off for the first three episodes, and then doing a time jump… after those three episodes.” Any fans sad that they missed senior prom and high school graduation can rest assured that the gang will complete those milestones soon.

A mystery will bring the gang back to town.

While the exact details of Riverdale‘s Season 5 plot are being kept tightly under wraps, it’s clear that something major would have to happen to bring the entire gang back to town after college. Mädchen Amick, also known as Betty’s mom, Alice Cooper, on the show, recently told TVLine, “I don’t know what they have planned [for Season 5], but I can only imagine there’s something that’s going to bring them back to town. If they’re all off going to these different colleges, I think that they had a time jump planned, that something brings them back.”

Sadly, it seems that Amick doesn’t have any inside info, either, as she told the site, “So what that is, who knows? But something clearly is going to bring all our favorite characters back to town and involved in some new thrilling adventure, I’m sure.”

Skeet Ulrich and Marisol Nichols are leaving.

In February 2020, Variety reported that two key characters would be leaving Riverdale. While they might appear at the start of Season 5, Jughead’s dad, FP, played by Skeet Ulrich, and Veronica’s mom, Hermione, played by Marisol Nichols, are both set to depart. It’s the end of an era!

Fans will have to wait until 2021.

While The CW renewed Riverdale for a fifth season in January 2019, the ensuing coronavirus pandemic means that production on the show is currently shut down. TV Guide reported, “The CW has pushed its new season until January 2021.” While new seasons of Riverdale typically premiere in October, viewers will be forced to wait until the new year for the show’s return. Luckily, it sounds like it’ll be worth the wait.
