Prince William and Prince Harry are not the brothers we used to know. In the last year, their once ultra-close relationship has been clouded with feud reports, an official household split, and a big move. And, it appears that they won’t go back to being the tight-knit brothers they once were any time soon.
As the Duke of Cambridge prepares for his future roles in the royal family and the Duke of Sussex gets accustomed to his new family life, the brothers have grown farther and farther apart in their duties and, seemingly, in their relationship, too.
Because Prince William is preparing for his Prince of Wales position, his royal duties look much different than Prince Harry’s. In addition, their on-going rumored feud has set them even farther apart. According to reports, the brothers have distanced themselves so much that they didn’t even speak to each other during Easter service last month.
“William and Kate are completely in transition as he prepares to take over as the Prince of Wales,” a source told People. “Their life together is all about preparing to be in charge, which is a significant reason for the wall between them and Harry and Meghan,” they added.
Prince William and Prince Harry Relationship
In the last year, Prince William and Prince Harry’s relationship has taken a major turn. And, it will only continue to change more and more as time goes on. Up ahead, take a closer look at the brothers’ new normal, including how their relationship might look in the future when Prince William becomes Prince of Wales.
They have separate royal households now
Earlier this year, the royal family announced one of the biggest changes to Prince William and Prince Harry’s lives yet: a royal household separation. As they prepare for their future leadership roles in the royal family, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge now have their own household, separate from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s.
They’re no longer neighbors
Prince William and Prince Harry grew up at Kensington Palace and, for the most part, lived there well into adulthood. However, their time as neighbors has officially ended. Ahead of Baby Archie’s arrival, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle packed up their cottage on the grounds of Kensington and headed to their new country home, Frogmore Cottage.
Since Frogmore Cottage is located a ways away in Windsor, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will need a place to stay in the city when attending functions in London. While they could have stayed in an apartment in Kensington Palace, they will instead stay at Buckingham Palace when in town.
Their royal duties are (for the most part) very separate
With the exception of their partnership on various mental health initiatives, Prince William and Prince Harry no longer work together on an official capacity. Sure, they will attend family gatherings and services to mark notable days like Remembrance Day, but they likely won’t show up to the same royal engagement for business outside of the family obligations.
They’re apparently feuding
It’s unclear how much of the feud allegations are true — and what even caused them to begin with. Some believe Prince William and Prince Harry’s rumored feud started after Prince William had concerns about his brother and Meghan Markle’s whirlwind relationship. However, others think it’s about a rumored affair between Prince William and Kate Middleton’s best friend, Rose Hanbury.
Regardless of the cause, the two brothers are, apparently, feuding on and off which has caused some tension between them.
They will continue to distance themselves
This is only the beginning for Operation Distance. As Prince William focuses more and more on his prominent role in the royal family, the brothers will continue to move farther apart. Privately, they might share a close bond, but the public won’t see too much of that since their roles in the royal family are so different.
Additionally, there are rumors of a potential move to Africa for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. If these allegations are true, the brothers will not only be separated by duties but by countries, too.
