Johnny Depp resigns from role in Fantastic Beasts

Pirates of the Caribbean is due to see an enormous change in the upcoming set of films. Rumours from throughout 2020 have suggested that Johnny Depp will not be returning to his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the as-of-yet unannounced films from the Disney series.

The rumours of Depp’s exit follow the high court case he endured against a British tabloid, and his ex-wife Amber Heard, over the course of 2020.

During the court case Depp’s personal life was detailed, including some allegations of abuse.

Because of this, Hollywood insiders have suggested that Disney have been looking for ways to remove Depp from the film franchise.

With this news making headlines, fans have taken it into their own hands to attempt to stop this from happening.

Fans began a petition to bring Depp back into the fold some years ago, but 2020 saw it picking up a lot of momentum.

At the time of writing, the “We want JOHNNY DEPP back as CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW” petition on change.org has just reached over 380,000 signatures.

With almost half a million hits, Disney soon may have no choice but to take a second to consider their next actions for the series.

One fan commented on the petition in support of the actor, saying: “I’m signing this because Johnny Depp is the only person who can and does bring captain jack sparrow to life he is a genius who knows what to do with a character.”

Further rumours have suggested that Depp will not be replaced by another actor, but simply written out of the series.

Depp has played Jack Sparrow in all five films thus far, and the character has survived every movie against all odds – so fans might not be too happy if he dies off-screen.

However Harley Quinn star Margot Robbie accidentally revealed that she is working on a reboot of the series in a recent interview.

She explained the upcoming film, which is being written by Christina Hodson, who wrote Birds of Prey, is going to include a lot of “girl power”.

Robbie added: “No, it’s too early to talk about it… I love Christina, obviously.

“I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process…

“No, we’re really, really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world.”

Further news has suggested that Margot will be bringing along another member of the DC Cinematic Universe into the franchise – Jared Leto.

The Joker actor would certainly fit right in to the franchise, as he is an actor who has taken on some eccentric roles in the past – including Blade Runner 2049’s Niander Wallace.

Right now, it seems like Leto could indeed be replacing Depp as some sort of younger version of Jack Sparrow, or simply be taking on a new character entirely.

Leto is extremely busy at the moment as he is making his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the upcoming anti-hero Morbius, which is coming out later this year.

The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available on Disney Plus now.
