Rod Stewart’s wife Penny Lancaster was reduced to tears as she addressed her debilitating menopause symptoms with Carolyn Harris MP. An emotional clip from the Loose Women star’s interview with the politician was aired on Friday’s instalment of Lorraine. Penny told Christine Lampard, who was filling in for host Lorraine Kelly, she is calling for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to be free on the NHS to help women.

In the heartbreaking clip, the 51-year-old tearfully explained: “Rod had to usher the kids out of the room at the time, but within five minutes they came back in.”

Penny started to break down in tears as she struggled to say the next part of her sentence.

As she was crying, she explained: “They said, ‘It’s going to be okay mummy’.

“I remember Rod saying [to the children], ‘I know mummy’s having a hard time, it’s the hormones just like when you have your period but it’s a lot worse.”

Penny explained to Christine that menopause symptoms first occurred during the coronavirus lockdown and initially thought she had tested positive for Covid-19.

“They were disrupting my sleep so I couldn’t function during the day, but the moment I started having that conversation, it’s so important for women to chat,” she added.

“We need to be encouraged to talk about the more embarrassing things and it wasn’t until I spoke to the ladies on Loose Women that they said, ‘I recognise what you are going through Penny.'”

Penny’s doctor gave her antidepressants and she revealed she was on them for a “long time” until she got HRT.

The antidepressants masked a lot of the symptoms but they did not deal with the underlying condition.

“It’s our doctors and our medical teams behind us who need to know the symptoms and get in there quickly with a diagnosis,” Christine noted.

Christine said all women will go through menopause at some point so it is crucial they know how to deal with it.

Penny said she also feels passionate about making HRT free for women to have as “half the population are dealing with it”.

She said: “70 percent of the NHS [nurses] are female so we can’t afford to lose any more nurses from the NHS.

“We are not asking for extra, we are just asking for our hormones back to feel normal.

“So if the Government could just give us what they promised and bring in, ideally, free HRT or if not, a huge discount on it.”

Earlier this month, Penny opened up to Dan Walker on Channel 5 about Rod supporting her through menopause.

“It crept up on me just as much as it did to [my family],” the former model told the broadcaster.

“It was a learning curve for everyone but I had luckily had the support of my husband, who was very understanding and I’m quite good at wearing my heart on my sleeve and discussing all sorts of topics.”

She gushed: “He’s a great advocate for men to watch out for those symptoms and look on the internet.”

Lorraine continues on weekdays from 9am on ITV.
