Peaky Blinders fans everywhere have been wracking their brains trying to work out who betrayed Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) at the end of series five. The dramatic finale saw his plan to take out political rival Oswald Mosely (Sam Claflin) backfire spectacularly, but it was left to viewers to work out who was responsible for the mess until season six, where we assume it will be revealed.
When you see it, you’ll go ‘Ah OK, yeah’
Anthony Byrne
Who are we kidding, it’ll be one of the main plot lines; we all know Tommy can’t let anything go.
In a recent Q&A, the question was put to current director of series five and six Anthony Byrne, who giggled at the prospect of us all finding out.
“When you see it, you’ll go ‘Ah OK, yeah,'” he smirked, not giving us ANYTHING to go off.
Unless you already know, in which case you have exactly two years to hold onto that theory before being proved right.
Until then, we have a a list of suspects who might have warned Mosley of Tommy’s plan.

What about innocent Billy Grade (Emmett J. Scanlan), who has been in the background for quite some time.
He was enlisted into the Birmingham gang unwittingly, and when Finn Shelby (Harry Kirton) disclosed the Peaky Blinders were going to kill Mosley, he picked up the phone to a mystery caller.
Maybe he’s not so innocent after all…
Second up, Tommy’s old war comrade Barney Thompson (Cosmo Jarvis), who they broke out of an asylum especially so they could use his shooting skills for the take down.
Perhaps a nervous Barney, who suffered with severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and was hardly lucid, could have let slip the details and consequently paid a high price for it.
But due to his condition, there would be no fault carried on his shoulders as he sought to serve his pal and it all would have been a mistake.
Still, a possible candidate though?
We also have the obvious candidates Michael and Gina Gray (Finn Cole and Anya Taylor-Joy), who were banished by Tommy for expressing their plans to take over as head of the Peaky Blinders.

Things came to a head in the season five finale as the newly weds made a proposition about restructuring the the family company, which didn’t go down well with the boys.
But Gina said her family was powerful and a force to be reckoned with, and suggested they would be “forced to take the second option”.
We have our money on them.
Then there’s the very much alive Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy), who could also be the reason behind the failed mission.
Maybe he wanted to get revenge on Tommy for, you know, shooting him in the head.

And we can’t blame him for that.
The gang leader told him all about his plan to take down his rival and the Camden gangster, who was laying low, knew all the ins and outs; a perfect place to be if you wanted to betray someone.
But whether he’d put his hatred of his almost-killer above his religious views, who knows, as Alfie is Jewish and may have wished someone to succeed in getting rid of Mosley, who is an anti-Semitic and racist.
So really, there are many contenders who fit the bill and Anthony’s probably right, we will kick ourselves if we get it wrong.
Peaky Blinders season 5 is streaming on Netflix UK now.
