The BBC series returns tonight for its fourth season of the military-based drama as Sergeant Georgie makes her final outing as actress Michelle Keegan steps down from the role. However, as she starts a new mission, fans will no doubt be keen to find out where the show get its inspiration from.

Georgie was recently left devastated when her fiancé Elvis (Luke Pasqualino) was killed in crossfire.

She struggled to get around the fact the love of her life was no longer there and this will continue to become increasingly apparent in the new series.

This season, fans of the show meet Georgie in a new role but she is forced to confront the realities of Afghanistan once again when she has a change of heart about her job.

As Georgie takes a huge risk and decides to face her demons, she is put in charge of new girl Mimi (Amy Leigh-Hickman), who has some secrets of her own.

This series will follow Georgie’s position as a mentor to army recruits as she encounters some brand-new struggles.

Ahead of tonight’s premiere, show creator Tony Grounds has spoken out about the “real stories” which inspire the BBC drama.

Speaking to press, including Express.co.uk, Tony revealed: “They’re all real stories. Obviously we constituted them, they haven’t all happened to one section.

“All the events that are happening, that’s why we wanted to go back and explore Afghanistan.

“Because although we’re not there with boots on the ground, we are there training and mentoring,” he explained.

This series will see Georgie’s unit have to work alongside local soldiers as Tony revealed some frightening statistics.

Tony added: “Since we pulled out in 2015, the Afghan national army and police have lost over 50,000 men.

“So it is an ongoing conflict. The guys who played the Afghan soldiers are here, they did a lot of work on that.”
