Martha Stewart and Gwyneth Paltrow are both celebrities with very well-known lifestyle brands. Stewart is the owner of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSO), which oversees her popular TV shows, books, and home products. Meanwhile, Paltrow is the founder of Goop, a company that promotes wellness and a natural health lifestyle.

Despite the fact that they work in the same field, Stewart and Paltrow seems to be anything but friendly with each other. In fact, they might actually be seriously feuding.

Stewart and Paltrow’s scuffle seems to have started in 2013. It was about five years after Goop was launched, and Stewart was asked about Paltrow’s entry into the lifestyle business. Onlookers couldn’t help but notice that Stewart’s response was a bit passive-aggressive.

“I haven’t eaten at Gwyneth’s house,” Martha said to Bloomberg TV. “I’ve never seen how she lives. But if she is authentic, all the better. I mean, and I certainly hope she is… She wants to be a lifestyle arbiter. Fine. Good. I think I started this whole category of lifestyle.”

A year later, Stewart was also quoted as saying that “if [Paltrow] were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart.”

However, Paltrow simply brushed off these harsh words. She told E! News: “If I’m really honest, I’m so psyched that she sees us as competition. I really am.”

Aside from taking digs at each other in the press, Stewart and Paltrow also mocked each other’s lives with their respective companies. For example, Stewart once released a pie spread called “Conscious Coupling” as a reference to Paltrow’s famous “conscious uncoupling” buzzword. Afterward, Paltrow released a recipe for a cake she called “Jailbird Cake” as a reference to Stewart’s time in prison.

Stewart and Paltrow do not seem to be burying their hatchets anytime soon. On a recent podcast with Alex Rodriguez, Stewart was asked about how Goop is compared to Stewart’s brand many years ago.

In response, Stewart said: “I don’t follow Goop. Sometimes I look at the products that she’s selling. I wish every young entrepreneur well, and I hope that there are many, many, many different kinds of entrepreneurs… if they’re movie stars or hardworking women like I am, who are not movie stars. If they have a good idea, I want them to be able to succeed. So good luck, Gwyneth.”

Fans are largely taking Martha Stewart’s side

Although Goop is a successful company that is worth about $250 million, it has attracted a fair share of critics. Paltrow’s health advice, such as those that tell followers to get bee stings to get rid of inflammation and to regularly undergo colonics to “remove toxins,” has come under fire for being pseudo-science and possibly even promoting dangerous ideas.

Additionally, some people have also taken issues with how expensive Goop’s products are. While Stewart’s merchandises are sold at affordable stores like Kmart, the products that Goop sells as well as the lifestyle that Paltrow promotes are too unattainable for the average person in America.

As a result, many internet users seem to not see a problem with Stewart calling out Goop and Paltrow.

“Who follows goop anyway? Lol,” a Twitter user said.

“I’d take Martha’s lifestyle/cooking advice over Gwyneth’s in a heartbeat,” another person commented.

At this point, it’s unclear whether Stewart and Paltrow can ever be on good terms or if they will escalate their feud to something even bigger. However, it’s clear that both women have dominated the lifestyle industry and their influence will not go away anytime soon.
