Strictly: Jamie Laing reacts to dance off record

Jamie Laing has taken the ‘most amount of times in the dance off’ crown this year, but can he also be called the 2020 Strictly Come Dancing champion? The Made In Chelsea star has left everything on the dance floor, week in, week out and despite not getting enough public votes to head straight through to the next week, the judges have seen his passion for dance and enthusiasm to try harder. Ahead of tonight’s grand finale which will see him and Karen Hauer perform three routines, Jamie has confessed to Express.co.uk that he is “not the best dancer” but he is determined to “go out and have fun”.

In a few hours time, Jamie will perform the Charleston – a dance which he initially did back in week three of the competition and got 23 points for – as well as a Show Dance and then his and Karen’s choice, the Street Commercial routine – which saw them getting two tens off the judges.

That Charleston, it was iconic for us,” Karen revealed. “I mean the wig alone was iconic!”

“The fact that we did that dance on the third week, and I feel now Jamie is more aware of his body and more aware of what he’s doing and how to utilise his body even better and his character.

“I’m saying you’ve improved but now, going into it, he’s just going to go for it.”

As for their Show Dance, Jamie spoke about the toll learning three routines is having on his body: “I wake up in the middle of the night and my body is honestly at the door. I’m like, come back please’.

“My feet have disappeared, they run away from me.

“I complain a little bit and say ‘I’m a bit tired’, she [Karen] has done this 30 years!

“Karen has got me lifting her in different places and I never lifted anyone so I have to lift Karen and sometimes I drop her, it’s not good, it’s really bad,” he laughed off.

Looking back on the past couple of months, the reality star also spoke about his highlights.

He explained: “I think, you want to experience everything you can possibly do in this competition and I think we’ve experienced everything; we’ve been at the top of the leaderboard, we’ve been at the bottom of the leaderboard, we’ve been in the dance off, all these different things.

“But the best bit was the Street dance because it was the first time I knew I could dance it. I was like ‘we can do this’, so it’s pretty special,” he continued.

And tonight, he gets to dance their epic Street/Commercial routine for the judges and viewers once more.

But how is he feeling about his Strictly journey coming to an end?

I am so happy and so thankful we are in the final because again, Karen honestly deserves it so much,” he said. “It’s not just for me but for Karen and it means so much to her.

“But also, if we are totally honest, and it’s taken me to week nine to realise this, I’m probably not the best dancer. As much as I thought as I was, I’m probably not.

“But what we do bring is our work ethic and we really go for it so yes we’re going to do it to the best we can but what we’re also going to do is, it’s the last time we get to dance together, so this is the moment you go out and just get to have fun,” Jamie added.

Karen also discussed Jamie’s attitude towards training and dancing in general and explained how “proud” she was of him, regardless of whether they lift the Glitterball Trophy or not.

She said: “I’ve never seen anybody bounce back with such positivity and such resilience.

“Being a part of Strictly – this is your second chance around – being given that opportunity is amazing and the fact I get to [dance with you], I made a friend and I’ve made a machine now because he has awesome abs!

“But I think it’s the whole mentality and the fact that during these times when everyone needs lifting, the fact that he’s been able to lift me and himself at times, and lifting people at home with his amazing routines.

“[He has] an amazing enthusiasm and energy and I think that’s what’s brilliant about Jamie. Everyone should have a Jamie in there life,” she continued.

“I am so proud of him, with all those ups and downs, he’s always had a smile on his face.”

So what are Jamie’s chances of winning the show?

According to bookmakers Betway, he is the least likely to lift the Trophy.

His odds sit at 50/1, while Bill Bailey is the current favourite with 8/11.
