Carol Vorderman reflects on her breakup from ex-husband

I’m A Celebrity…South Africa star Carol Vorderman has made rare comments about the break down of her marriage to second husband Patrick King. 

Carol was married first to former international rugby league player Christopher Mather in 1985 but their union lasted just 12 months. 

She went on to marry management consultant Patrick King and the pair have two children together. 

Speaking on Friday’s instalment of This Morning, Carol addressed her painful break-up from her second husband, after vowing never to speak about her reasons why.

Comparing their breakup to a bereavement, she said: “If you are in a long-term relationship and you breakup, and I’ve been through one of those when I was very, very happily married to Paddy for many years and suddenly we weren’t…It’s like grief. 

“It’s like a bereavement. And people shouldn’t belittle it and go, ‘Oh yeah go out and you’re all having a good time’. It doesn’t work like that.

“And with bereavement there are you know the five stages of grief and one of them is anger and then ultimately it’s acceptance and moving forward.” 

Who was Carol’s second husband?

Four years after her split from her first husband the then 29-year-old Carol married Patrick King. 

He is a management consultant from London and not much is known about his background.

The couple married in 1990 and lasted a decade before divorcing in 2000.

Do Carol and Patrick have children?

Carol and Patrick have two kids with Katie born in 1992 and Cameron born in 1997. 

Cameron, who suffers from severe learning disabilities, gained his master’s degree from Dundee University.

The couple’s daughter, Dr Katie King Ph.D. is a nanotechnologist who graduated from Cambridge. 

She currently works researching the attachment of a new drug specifically to a cancer tumour using gold nanoparticles which once through clinical trials could mean the end of chemotherapy throughout the body. 

Why did Carol and Patrick break up?

Carol has never publicly revealed the reasons for their split but in 2021 she confessed to Woman magazine she had regrets about her divorce and there was no hope of a reconciliation.

“I never said why my marriage broke down and we’d agreed never to talk about it publicly,” she said.

“The divorce is a regret of mine and my mum thinks that we should have stayed together. He’s now remarried so there’s no chance of us getting back together.” 

Hinting her career was to blame, she conceded: “Had my career not taken off like it did, Paddy and I probably wouldn’t have split up.”
