Holby City was forced to shut down production earlier this year as coronavirus restrictions halted filming on several BBC dramas. However, just days after the medical drama resumed production, Holby City decided to take an extended break and will be off air for the foreseeable future.

The BBC medical drama will not air at its usual time of 8pm tonight.

Instead, a repeat of Babs, the biopic of Barbara Windsor will be televised in Holby City’s place from 8.30pm.

Holby City previously took a break earlier in the year but has now finally run out of episodes.

It comes after the UK-wide lockdown, which saw the drama take an extended break in April to help preserve episodes.

Holby City returned on June 2 but has been forced to take a second absence while they build up episode reserves.

It’s not yet clear exactly when the drama will return.

The BBC previously confirmed the show has resumed production and the coronavirus will feature in upcoming episodes.

To get the drama back on screens as quickly as possible, Holby City will return with shorter, 40-minute episodes.

BBC Studios’ Head of Continuing Drama Kate Oates teased they’ll be a “battle” in store for the Holby General staff.

Announcing the return to filming, she said: “It’s with great pleasure that we open the doors at Elstree to welcome back the exceptional cast and crew of Holby City.

“We have some compelling stories to tell as we explore how the lives of our characters have been changed since the start of the pandemic.

“And how our heroes battle against the odds, come what may.”

In recent weeks, Holby City has followed on from a classic episode of EastEnders.

The BBC soap was also taken off air earlier this year after running out of episodes but will return next month.

Tonight’s classic instalment is an hour-long special from 2000 as Frank Butcher (Mike Reid) and Pat Butcher’s (Pam St Clement) affair is exposed.

Pat was married to Roy Evans (Tony Caunter) at the time while Frank was the Queen Vic landlord with wife Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor).

After the lovers’ affair is exposed to the Square, Frank departs Walford.

EastEnders is followed by a biopic of Barbara’s life which follows the key events of the actress’ life over 50 years.

Samantha Spiro, Jaime Winstone, Honor Kneafsey and Barbara herself share the lead role.

Holby City is available on BBC iPlayer.
