With Iron Man unfortunately out of the picture going into Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker’s mentor became Agent Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Also available to assist Fury was Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). 

Just when fans thought the only twist in the film was Mysterio’s true motives, it actually turned out the post-credits scene would deliver the big whammy. Nick Fury is actually sipping piña coladas in space, while Talos and Soren have been portraying Fury and Hill on Earth.

What the movies have told us about the Talos and Nick Fury switch

After that was revealed, it got fans questioning everything. But the movie doesn’t give fans much, other than confirming that Fury was a Skrull, at least for the duration of Far From Home.

You can also deduce that the space station the real Fury is on is S.W.O.R.D. That stands for Sentient World Observation and Response Department. It’s a counter-terrorism group like S.H.I.E.L.D. except with more of a focus on space-related threats. In the short post-credits scene, the real Nick Fury is laid back, slow-walking, and surrounded by Skrulls on whatever spacecraft he’s on, if it’s not S.W.O.R.D. 

But that’s it, that’s all the movies tell us about that switch, which doesn’t actually answer a lot of questions. That’s where the theories come in.

The theory suggests Talos has been Fury for a while

There have been hypotheses for ages on when the switch happened, with many noting the now-infamous sandwich scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Fury cut his sandwhich diagonally, even though he told Carol Danvers he can’t have his toast like that. Is it just toast? Or was this a hint that Fury has been a Skrull that long? 

A new theory actually suggests it’s been since Captain America: The Winter Solder, even sooner than Ultron. As reported by ComicBook.com, user u/Jacob_wallace posted this thought to Reddit

As the theory states, Fury is severely injured in The Winter Soldier and instead of being saved on Earth, he’s flown to the Skrulls in space so they can help him with their advanced tech. So that morale isn’t dampened morale with the Avengers or on Earth, Talos takes over as Fury and posed as the secret agent for years.  

Does this change the way we view Nick Fury’s role in past films?

This would mean Talos has been Fury for four movies other than TWS: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame, and Far From Home. That means when he gets dusted, it’s as Talos, and when he attends Tony’s funeral, it’s also as Talos unless Fury came back for that one moment.

But this doesn’t affect his character or negatively change how fans see his roles in these films because he’s still acting as Fury, and it’s only obvious he’s not Fury in FFH. Plus, Talos’ phone call makes it seem like Fury is up to date on everything going on, which is another relief.

But one other time you can now spot is in Infinity War when Maria Hill calls Fury, “Nick.” If you recall from Captain Marvel, no one, not even his kids, would be able to call him anything but Fury or Agent Fury. Just another tidbit that he wasn’t quite himself there either.

You’ll have to wait to get more information about the Fury/Talos situation, though. Obviously the future of Marvel is the most obscure it’s been in a while, so anything is fair game moving forward. But rest assured that this will definitely be touched on in a future film.
