Sacha Baron Cohen couldn’t resist making jabs at Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump as he accepted two awards for Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm.

The British actor revived his bumbling Kazakhstani journalist after shooting the film in secret during 2020, interacting with people unaware that he’s an actor to gauge their reaction.

This included a weekend with white supremacists, heading to a Trump rally where he was almost shot, and most notably, hoodwinking Trump’s right hand man Rudy Giuliani.

The sequel landed best film – comedy or musical, as well as Sacha earning an award for best actor in a comedy or musical film during last night’s virtual ceremony, hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.

Sacha, joined by wife Isla Fisher from his home, first joked that ‘Donald Trump was contesting the result’ when he won his first award, and was seen shocked at landing the best film win, one of the most sought after awards of the night.

He joked: ‘This movie couldn’t have been possible without my co-star.

‘A fresh new talent who came from nowhere, and turned out to be a comedy genius. I’m talking, of course, about Rudy Giuliani.’

Trump’s personal lawyer Giuliani, 76, became the unexpected star of the film after he agreed to an interview with Borat’s daughter Tutar (played by Maria Bakalova).

After heading to a hotel room for drinks, Giuliani seemed to unzip and put his hands down his trousers as he lay down on a bed.

Borat (played by Sacha) then quickly intervened before anything else could happen, declaring his daughter as ‘only 15’. (Thankfully, Maria is actually 24.)

Giuliani has later called the scenes a ‘hit job’ to distract voters in the then-upcoming American election, and claimed he was simply tucking his shirt in after removing his microphone following the interview.

‘Who could get more laughs out of one unzipping?’ Sacha joked at the Golden Globes, not having any of it. ‘Incredible. Our movie was just the beginning for him.

‘Rudy went on to star in a string of comedy films. Hits like Four Seasons Landscaping, Hair Dye Another Day and the courtroom drama, A Very Public Fart.’

Maria, a newcomer actress, was also nominated for best actress in a motion picture – musical or comedy, but despite being the bookies’ favourite for taking home the gong, lost out to Rosamund Pike for I Care A Lot.
