Gogglebox has been one of the most popular offerings from Channel 4 in recent years and last Friday saw viewers’ favourite families back to give their takes on the week’s biggest TV moments. However, as always, the show’s cast gave some insight into their own thoughts on the hottest topics of the week. And as the coronavirus pandemic continues to remain in the UK, the Michael family weighed in on their feelings on the Government’s response while watching BBC news – but their comments have reportedly led to 16 complaints, meaning the cast members could be investigated by Ofcom.
The Brighton-based favourites have been a firm fixture on the Friday night show since it started back in 2013.
But a number of viewers were left complaining to the broadcast regulator after recent comments made by the family.
It took place as they discussed part of a BBC News segment shown during last week’s episode, which focused on the pandemic.
The family went on to note how many young people were moving to parts of the other country for the start of the university term.
It was Louis and Alex’s comments that caused concern after they suggested older people should “self-isolate” as they are more at risk.
The pair started to talk about how universities might look different this year – but their comments didn’t go down so well with everyone at home.
Louis said: “As long as they’re [students] not going clubbing and picking up 18/19-year-olds and taking them back to halls, things will be fine.
“It seems crazy that they were putting out all of these schemes like Eat Out To Help Out and trying basically to get everyone back to normal.”
He added of the Government’s response: “And now they’re blaming young people.”
It comes amid pleas from various cabinet ministers who have pleaded with young people to be careful as the rate of infections continues to rise.
Alex replied: “It just seems backwards to me because if there’s a small group of people who are at risk of dying, then it should be them self-isolating – not the large group of young people.
“And also it should be their choice because if they’re aware of the risks and the statistics then it should be their choice whether they isolate or not.

“But to make everyone else put their lives on hold, it’s ridiculous,” remarked the Gogglebox star.
However, these comments did not go down so well with some of those at home.
The Mirror Online has reported 16 complaints were made in response to the discussion which aired on Friday, September 11.
This could result in an investigation being carried out if the regulator decides there is sufficient evidence to do so.
Express.co.uk has contacted representatives for both Gogglebox and Ofcom for a response to the complaints.
Some of those watching at home also took to Twitter after being unimpressed with the remarks made by the duo.
One said: “#Gogglebox the Michael family daughter! Self before the community, self before loved ones, self before everybody.”
Another commented: “Seriously not impressed with the views of the Michael family on #Gogglebox – typically so selfish of that generation #COVID19 possibly even #COVIDIOTS.”
“The Michael family. So bloody selfish and ignorant. I’ll just give up working and hide in a box. Happy now? #GOGGLEBOX,” wrote a third.
Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
