Back in 2013, Disney released their latest animated feature film based on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen. The original musical was a sure-fire hit, achieving over $1.2 billion worldwide, breaking box office records. Frozen even won two Oscars including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Let It Go, so it’s no surprise that a sequel was soon green-lit.
And finally after six years Frozen 2 (or Frozen II) is here after a string of trailers teasing a plot as secret as the latest Avengers or Star Wars movie.
But despite all the hype, this Disney sequel was not worth the wait and frankly shouldn’t exist at all.
While Toy Story sequels have proved the exception, lightning doesn’t strike twice for this franchise.
In terms of set up, Frozen 2 is set three years after the events of first movie.

- Frozen 2: Does Elsa have a girlfriend in Frozen 2?
Life is going well for Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven in the kingdom of Arendelle.
But then The Snow Queen starts hearing some sort of calling from the North.
Deciding to investigate, the group of friends embark on a journey to find the origins of Elsa’s magical abilities.
What follows does provide a few big reveals for fans eager to know what was going on in the trailers, but beyond that, this is a film that lacks the heart and soul of the original.
Much of Frozen 2 sees our heroes wandering about on this journey, in what sadly proves to be pretty dull.
Every now and then a new song is introduced to keep the audience interested.
However, the substance of the lyrics are pretty mundane and have little to do with pushing the plot on further, from Some Things Never Change and When I Am Older to Lost in the Woods.
That said, Idina Menzel’s performance of Into the Unknown stands out as the soundtrack’s most impressive song but doesn’t quite reach the iconic status of Let it Go.

A somewhat redeeming feature was Josh Gad’s comic relief in Olaf, which was a welcome break from some of the more boring travel scenes.
At one point Olaf performs a hilarious one-(snow)man recap of the first movie and the beginning of Frozen 2 up to that point in the plot.
Additionally, the film’s overall message discovered towards the end is somewhat inspiring and relevant, with a particular reveal appearing to be a specific criticism of a certain world leader across the pond.
But ultimately this wasn’t enough to save Frozen 2, which to be honest we didn’t really need.
No doubt Frozen 2 will still go on to storm the box office considering the popularity of its predecessor.
So with a Frozen III being somewhat inevitable, let’s just hope Disney can rediscover the magic of the original that this sequel failed to capture.
Because for the first time in forever, we’re feeling pretty frosty about this franchise.
Frozen II is released in UK cinemas on November 22, 2019.
