EastEnders resident Whitney Dean (played by Shona McGarty) was left stunned last night when husband-to-be Callum Highway (Tony Clay) confessed to sleeping with Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden).
The cliffhanger will roll into tonight’s instalment, but many will be left wondering whether the wedding will still go ahead?
Over the past few weeks, viewers have tuned in to see the chemistry between the undertaker and mechanic bubble until they couldn’t resist temptation.
But who is going to get the happy-ever-after storyline?
During an interview with Radio Times, EastEnders boss Kate Oates spoke about the storyline with has gripped the nation and teased a possibility of the fans getting what they want: Ben and Callum to get together.
“In any story, you need to see the pain that an infidelity causes the injured party [Whitney]. That’s interesting drama,” she defended.
“But these stores work because a large part of the audience believes the ‘new’ couple should be together and that, ergo, the existing relationship is somewhat doomed anyway.”
As for what is going to play out on screen, Kate continued to say: “Callum might try and ‘do right’ by Whitney in ignoring his feelings for Ben, but will that really ensure her happiness in the long run?
“Whats important is that we get to see how the ‘rejected’ character [Ben] responds – and what story mileage that gives.”
Therefore, has it been suggested Whitney and Callum will go through with the wedding despite Callum’s strong feelings towards Ben?
As for what Ben is going to do about the situation, there is no doubt he is going to be very sensitive towards Callum as he helps him try and figure out his sexuality.
But he will probably pile on the pressure for him to make a decision as with every day that passes, he is forced to see Callum and Whitney play happy families.
As for how Whitney is going to react to Callum’s admission, scenes are going to show it kicking off between Whitney and Ben.
With Callum’s secret out, his fiancé wastes no time in confronting Ben, but she is going to be shocked when the full truth comes out.
Discussing Whitney’s reaction, the actress who plays her said: “She feels absolutely betrayed and feels that she doesn’t even know who Callum is anymore.
“After the initial shock she just wants the truth – she can’t believe what’s happening.
“She never thought in a million years that he’d ever do this to her, she thought he was the one – it’s so sad,” she said to Digital Spy.
While Whitney is under the impression their affair is nothing more than “just a silly kiss”, the showdown between Whitney and Ben tonight will show BBC One viewers just how hurt she really is.
“She 100% she blames Ben, at the moment, I can’t see her ever forgiving him.”
EastEnders returns to BBC One tonight at 8pm.
