SHANE Richie has revealed his original romantic storyline when he first joined the soap – and it WASN'T with Kat Slater.

The actor, 58, will be returning to Albert Square this autumn.

Spoilers show Alfie crashing Phil and Kat's wedding and trying to convince her that she should be with him instead of Phil.

Can Kat be convinced?

Shane told the press he was delighted to be asked to return to EastEnders.

He teased the old cheeky Alfie is back with his flowery shirts and leather jacket.

But he also revealed how his romance with Kat wasn't the original plan when he first joined.

He said: "Well 20 years ago the whole Kat and Alfie phenomenon purely happened by accident.

"Tony Jordan was going to create the graduate story with Alfie and Peggy."

Tony was a producer at the time who created the Mitchell, Moon and Slater families.

The 1967 romantic film follows Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) who has just finished college and moved back to his parents' house.

He's trying to avoid the one question everyone keeps asking: What does he want to do with his life?

An unexpected diversion crops up when he is seduced by Mrs Robinson (Anne Bancroft), a bored housewife and friend of his parents.

But what begins as a fun tryst turns complicated when Benjamin falls for the one woman Mrs Robinson demanded he stay away from, her daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross).

While he is lured into a seductive affair with the wife of his father's business partner, college graduate Benjamin also falls in love with Elaine.

Shane went on to say: "And then off camera, me and Jessie just met and we were having a right laugh and the writers saw this chemistry.

"And purely that relationship happened by accident and from there of course it escalated and now 20 years later… after all the things that happened between Kat and Alfie there's still a spark there."
