EastEnders fans were fuming as Jack Branning argued with Linda Carter over who the father of her baby is while she went into labour.

Viewers were in for an exciting night on Monday as they watched the fall out of the fire at Phil Mitchell’s family home.

As Phil crawled out of the home, fans were sat on the edge of their seat as Janine Butcher, her daughter Scarlett and Tommy Moon were locked inside the children’s bedroom as the property was engulfed in flames.

But while residents panicked for the soap legend, fans couldn’t help but complain as the detective interrogated the Queen Vic landlady while she was having contractions in the kitchen.

Unconvinced by her strong contractions, Jack continued to interrogate Linda as to who the father was after he noticed how shaken she was when he revealed his brother Max was returning to Albert Square.

His insistent questioning came as he suspected Max was the true father of Linda’s baby, months after he had taken Abi from her.

But his doubts at her false labour soon disappeared after the landlady’s water broke in the bedroom.

And with all the attention focused on the fire at 55 Victoria Road, Jack was the only person who could help deliver the baby.

Frustrated at their predicament, Jack tried to leave the house before Linda called out to him in a panic.

“Don’t leave me,” she begged.

Still angry at her lies, he argued: “I shouldn’t be the one doing this.”

“Yes you should, you’re his uncle,” she declared. “Please don’t hate me, I just wanted my baby to have a good life and now Max is coming back and he’s gonna ruin everything.”

“No he isn’t,” Jack reassured. “I just wanted to know the truth.”

But his response wasn’t well received by viewers as fans shared their frustrations at the copper on Twitter.

One user wrote: “Jack’s supposed to be a detective inspector yet he can’t detect that Linda is in labour?”

Another added: “Struggling to believe that jack would refuse to believe Linda is in labour actually.”

A third chimed in with: “Just watching Jack argue with Linda about who the dad is whilst she’s in labour.

"I’m real sorry but can’t that conversation wait until her labour has finished? I think she’s a lil preoccupied!”

“What nonsense is this with Jack. Will he stop when he sees the baby’s head?” another joked.

EastEnders continues Tuesday at 7.30pm on BBC One
