The third installment of the sports drama film series sets an opening weekend record for the franchise as it is expected to pull almost twice as much as the initial expectations.
AceShowbiz -“Creed III” has risen as a new champion at North American box office. The sports drama easily knocked out former winner “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” from the top spot with an estimated $58.6 million.
The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer release took in an impressive $22 million opening day, including $5.45 million from preview screenings earlier in the week. The “Rocky” spin-off sets an opening weekend record for the franchise as it exceeded initial expectations that had the drama pegged at an opening in the $30 million.
Overseas, the Michael B. Jordan starrer also struck a major blow, opening to a franchise-best $41.8 million from 75 markets for a global start of $100.4 million. “This is beyond all of our expectations. And we knew that we had something special,” says Erik Lomis, head of distribution for MGM, which released the film.
“Everything went right here starting with the movie itself. It was just up to us not to break it when they gave it to us and we didn’t,” Lomis gushed over the film, which was directed by Jordan in his feature directorial debut. He added, “I’ve been doing this a long time and that’s rarefied air. People love the movie.”
The third installment in the “Creed” film franchise easily defeated the “Ant-Man” threequel, which slides to No. 2 after suffering another significant drop (61%) in its third weekend. It has added an estimated $12.5 million to its domestic gross, which has now reached $186.8 million.
“Cocaine Bear” is also forced down to No. 3 with approximately $11 million, dropping 52.6% percent from last week. “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village“, a combination of episodes of the popular anime series, trails close behind at No. 4 with an estimated $10.1 million.
Religious film “Jesus Revolution” falls two spots to No. 5 with approximately $8.65 million. With a reported $15 million production budget, the movie starring Kelsey Grammer as a pastor has easily turned a profit with a total domestic gross of $30.5 million after almost two weeks in theaters.
