Head of entertainment commissioning at ITV Katie Rawcliffe, said: “It’s easy to throw the words ‘legend’ and ‘icon’ around.

“But, Barbara Knox really does embody both of those terms.

“It’s a privilege to tell the story of one of British television’s most enduring stars as she celebrates a very special birthday.”

In recent scenes, fans saw the no-nonsense character quit her job at The Kabin after coming to blows with newcomer Isabella Benvenuti (Flaminia Cinque).

Coronation Street viewers know the newsagents holds a special place in Rita’s heart as she ran it from 1973 until 2006 when Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) bought half of it.

She only covered some shifts to help Brian (Peter Gunn), but his distant Italian cousin scolded Rita for being too old to be working and stated Brain should get a younger assistant.

Not one to be taken a fool off, Rita stood her ground and quit her job on the spot, with many fans thrilled to see her feisty side come out.

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
