Bradley Walsh is known for hosting The Chase, but the presenter continues to impress viewers with his acting in ITV’s The Larkins. The uplifting family drama follows the titular family on their picturesque farmhouse in Kent, and they lead a simple life. Walsh spoke to Express.co.uk and other media about how he put on weight whilst filming.

The Larkins has been providing the perfect sense of escapism for viewers since it started airing on ITV.

The latest small-screen adaptation of The Darling Buds of May has been warming the hearts of families on Sunday evenings.

The drama features Pop Larkin, his wife (Joanna Scanlan) and children as they live by traditional family values.

Fans have fallen in love with the idyllic setting, which is in the middle of the Kent countryside.

Walsh opened up about how all the food on set had caused him to gain eight pounds in weight.

He said: “I have got to say, I don’t know about the others but actually from the start of the show, I can’t remember when we started, it was like the beginning of April I think, something like that.

“I ended up putting on eight pound in weight. By the time we finished the series I had put on eight pound in weight and that was with training.

“So you now know how tricky that is, Jo [Scanlan] had cooked some food or brought some food to the table and I ended up having that for my lunch as well.

“I just stayed at the table eating it for my lunch. It’s a tricky old show, it really is.”

He joked about how he was being measured up for some bigger suits for his role on The Chase.

The role of Pop comes naturally to Walsh as he is known for being a family man.

Speaking about who he based the character on, he said: “I am actually Pop Larkin, whatever you want I can get it, it’s just the way it is.

“The way I based Pop is on two people that I know really well and they will be thrilled to know.

“I’m not going to tell them, when it’s all over and we are done and dusted with it then I’ll tell them it was them.

“But if they can’t guess it they are not living under the same planet.”

One of his favourite things about being on set was the fact it made him feel young again.

He added: “This show is great, what I love about it is being around everyone, when you’re working with younger cast members it’s fantastic.

“It keeps you young, you can have a laugh and I really do enjoy the show.”

The Chase star initially spoke out about whether he had made the right decision accepting the role.

This was due to the fact he would have to balance the job with all of his other showbiz commitments.

However, when he found out who else was on board the series he was excited to take part.

Fans will be able to look forward to more content from the Larkin family as they will return for a Christmas special later this year.

The series is made up of six episodes and the season finale will air on November 14.

The Christmas special is scheduled to air on Boxing Day, December 26, and it promises to bring plenty of festive cheer.

The Larkins airs on Sundays on ITV at 8pm.
