The Great British Bake Off has become an institution in Britain, with millions of viewers tuning in each Tuesday night to watch the action in the Bake Off tent. On Tuesday, September 21, 2021, the programme will return to Channel 4 for its 12th season and 12 new contestants have already filmed the episodes alongside judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, as well as hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas. Here is everything you need to know about the bakers.

All the cast and crew for this year’s season followed the same procedures as last year, creating a giant Covid cohort to work through the pandemic with no social distancing needed.

Similarly, it has also been filmed in the same location of Down Hall Hotel, Spa and Estate in the Hertfordshire countryside.

The Victorian country house is situated on the border between Hertfordshire and Essex, in a move from the show’s previous home in Berkshire.

This year’s series will also be the second Matt has hosted alongside Noel after taking on the role from Sandi Toksvig last year.

With the episodes having already been filmed, this year’s bakers have brought a mixture of heritages to the tent, including Italian, Caribbean, German, Greek, Portuguese and Indian.

Who are the Great British Bake Off contestants?

Freya

The 19-year-old is the youngest contestant to be taking part in this year’s season and she could become the show’s youngest-ever winner.

Currently a student, the contestant resides in North Yorkshire and will be looking to bring some of her home remedies into her baking.

Crystelle

A client relationship manager, Crystelle will be hoping to hone her skills into her baking to impress the judges.

The 26-year-old is one of a handful of contestants from London this year and she too will be hoping to bag the prize.

Rochica

From Birmingham, the 27-year-old will be wanting to ensure they keep their place in the competition secure with their baking.

The contestant’s day to day life sees them as working tirelessly as a junior HR business partner, worlds away from life in the tent.

Tom

The 28-year-old has a passion for whipping up sweet treats in the kitchen, which allows him to take a break from working life.

Based in Kent, the contestant pursues a career in software development.

Lizzie

Aged 28, the Car Production Operative, the contestant is used to getting stuck into challenges, making it no mean feat on taking on the tasks in the tent.

From Liverpool, she will be travelling the furthest from the North of any bakers taking part in the programme.

George

George, 34, is from London and will be hoping to impress the judges with his baking skills.

When he is not cooking up a storm in the kitchen, the amateur baker puts his efforts into charity work as a Shared Lives coordinator.

Chigs

The 40-year-old is travelling from Leicestershire to try and win over Paul and Prue with his luxurious bakes.

Having taken up a profession in being a sales manager, the businessman will be hoping to use his skills in the kitchen.

Giuseppe

Known for being a chief engineer in his hometown of Bristol, the 45-year-old will be cooking up a storm in the kitchen.

Jairzeno

A head of Finance from London, the 51-year-old will be hoping to take the crown from last year’s winner, Peter Sawkins from Edinburgh.

Jürgen

As one of the oldest contestants taking part this year, Jürgen, will be hoping to get closer to the final if not win over the younger cast members.

The 56-year-old IT professional from Sussex will be hoping his heritage can elevate him to the top of his game.

Amanda

Also aged 56, the contestant from London has a sharp eye for the finer details.

The amateur baker is a MET police detective so some of her bakes could be themed around the force and its infamous colours.

Maggie

Maggie is the oldest contestant to be taking part in this year series at 70 years old but that hasn’t stopped her from taking on the younger cast members.

A retired midwife from Dorset, the baker will likely take some of her younger co-stars under her wing.

The Great British Bake Off begins Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at 8pm on Channel 4.
